592887 2007-09-24 22:00:00 I agree with most of this thread.

We’ve got a useless lot in power and an equally useless lot waiting in the wings waiting to replace them.

You can’t win.

592888 2007-09-24 22:04:00 Yes there are major problems with the Labour Gov but if you think voting in national will make things better you are living in a dream world.

Exactly. Here is support for your position:

This will make all the Tory fanboys happy. Selling off the family silver is going to start all over again if the Tories get back in - the very thing that shows them in their true colours. Greed, greed, greed. Sell off all the assets that all of us have paid for, make sure you flog them off to your mates and those cash cows overseas, and sell out your country to the highest bidder. Dress it all up in the tired old rhetoric about "giving Mum and Dad investors in NZ a fair go", but the reality is that the assets all end up in overseas hands and the wealthy of NZ.

This is the very thing that repelled the voters in the 1990's and helped chuck the Tories out. This government may be flaky, and I would be as happy as anyone to see the end of clunkers like Mallard and the smarmy one from Palmerston North, but this is the price you will pay for voting Tory. Another three years of pigs in the trough freeing up the family silver for their mates.

And don't forget the other Bradford - Mad Max - when you are paying your usurous power bill. He has caused more damage to this country than Sue Bradford. How many pensioners are dying or living in misery as a result of his Tory insanity? The worst Sue Bradford ever did was to seriously annoy people who like to belt kids. But I digress - she is not in the government.

Remember Max Bradford and Bill English when you go to the polls next year.

592893 2007-09-25 22:07:00 Right now I'm more concerned about who to vote for in the local body elections . This year we're getting a new mayor so the devil we know is being replaced with an unknown entity .

Whilst Bob Parker seems the sensible type with ratepayers at heart, I don't like the way he isn't fronting up to who is funding his campaign . Why the secrecy? Is that just a taste of what's to come?

Megan Woods is the only alternative but she's not an independant and thus prone to string pulling .

There are only two sitting members of our Community Board seeking re-election so casting a vote there is also difficult .

One thing I do know for certain - Garry Moore's $16,000 "farewell party" is a gross abuse of public money .

592894 2007-09-25 22:27:00 Zigakkerly. I can't bring myself to vote for a second rate TV "personality" to be mayor. Great to see the end of Moore, but I am distinctly underwhelmed by the replacements. I think I will take a risk and go for Woods because at least you know where she is coming from and who is promoting her. Like you, I am deeply suspicious of the secrecy surrounding Parker. And his record on rates in Banks Peninsula is distinctly iffy.

I think the thing that swings it for me as far as Woods is concerned is her stated position on the Great Water Theft by Dairy Farmers Inc. Anyone that opposes a situation where the Requiring Authority (or whatever they are called) is the authority that can compulsorily acquire land that has been in family hands for generations and who are unwilling to sell, and at the same time be the people who will make huge profits from seizing that land is OK with me. And that is without considering all of the other concerns about the scheme itself, such as private ownership of water and pollution of our water table by leachate from massive dairy farms.

As far as I am concerned, I think I will only vote for the mayor, and a couple of other people who I know enough about to support. Otherwise, most of them are an unknown quantity. The one I really liked was Graham Condon, and sadly he is now gone.

And I think the cost of the trough that our local pigs supped at was $19,000, not $16,000. For the benefit of those outside ChCh who may not know, the local council put on a beanfeast to farewell the unlamented mayor and several equally unlamented councillors. The cost was $165 per plate, and the departees were allowed to invite 12 guests each! All paid for by the ratepayers. You see what we are up against.
