Don't feel jealous on this one, even if it may be the reason your trout are so miniaturised. ;) | R2x1 (4628)
| 593521 | 2007-09-24 21:48:00 | I’m glad to see in this forum so many non-believers in this Hoax called “Global Warming” or, the renamed version “Climate Change”. Like the Y2K bug, the demise of the entire population by AIDS, the demise of the entire population by a Bird Flu pandemic, and so on, it is just another great hoax that will be commercially exploited by the perpetrators right to the bitter end. As this is a computer forum in the main, let us examine the Y2K bug. Remember how Aeroplanes were supposed to fall out of the sky, water wouldn’t run down hill so you had to fill your baths before midnight, sewerage would run uphill all over the bathroom floor, the North & South poles would reverse, cars with computers wouldn’t start and on and on it went. The government even appointed a Y2K commissioner who was still drawing his pay 12 months later. Yes Supermarkets had a huge run on bottled water and survival kits and when it was all done and dusted the Media report that the biggest event was that a Video store somewhere in America had a problem with their database. The database was written by a High School student and he had now remedied the problem. Big Deal. Yes, I’m still filthy at how our government allowed the vulnerable to be exploited and indeed were a major player in that exploitation. It seems some never learn and are lining up to be sucked in yet again. |

Who said that, in his opinion, the "climate change" hype, will soon be eclipsed by a real international concern about dwindling food reserves. He's doing some study on it, just to see where NZ farming fits into the big picture, and he says it's apparent that the demand for food, which can't be met now, gets greater each each year. I took it that when he said international concern, he meant more than concern about the plight of third world countries, because that concern is there now. |

| 593524 | 2007-09-25 03:08:00 | I was talking to a farming consultant, last night . Who said that, in his opinion, the "climate change" hype, will soon be eclipsed by a real international concern about dwindling food reserves . He's doing some study on it, just to see where NZ farming fits into the big picture, and he says it's apparent that the demand for food, which can't be met now, gets greater each each year . I took it that when he said international concern, he meant more than concern about the plight of third world countries, because that concern is there now . Both of you . . . including JackStraw are off the mark a little . There's food shortages, yup . . . and the Biafra thing runs all the time and children starve and adults sacrifice their own food for the kids . . . but it's not the production of the foods that are the problem . I saw huge food lots on docks with the rats eating them . . . and nobody seemed to care . I saw huge grain elevators full of corn, wheat and rye and there were armed guards protecting it until it rotted and not one cupful went to a single person . I have personally seen milk being poured into street gutters by invading troops so the local populous could not have any . The sin against mankind is fomented by other men . . the ones with the big stick, the court order by machination or the occupying troops . There is more than enough food . . . it just never gets to the people who need it . The same is true of medicines and medical care . It's a border thing I feel . . and there shouldn't be any borders . . . it just makes criminals out of people . Look at the Mexico/US border problem . . it's the money, not civil rights or humane treatment that's at stake . It ain't about free of cheap labor . . it's money under the table of people who take bribes and turn their backs on the misery . |

It's quite another thing to talk about disaster relief, where aid supplies never get though fast enough or untouched by corruption and mismanagement. I guess it is all related in the end, especially at the moment with the extreme floods in Africa (following droughts) wiping out the crops and thus causing disaster for hundreds of thousands. It's easy to be cynical and adopt the attitude that it's not climate related, people always seem to say that's it's either the worst drought or flood 'in living memory', but there does seem to be ever increasing trends of extreme environmental change. | Andy1 (8755)
| 593526 | 2007-09-25 06:47:00 | Regarding UV, NZ and Aussie has the world highest UV levels in the world, and the highest skin cancer occurrences. You can mince around the facts any way you like. It's not bull****, it's real, and the Ozone depletion is real, and the hole will be floating larger over NZ again this summer! Thanks to all the selfish polluters world wide, shame it can't localize over the primary culprits. | Andy1 (8755) | ||
| 593527 | 2007-09-25 07:18:00 | The coming food shortage is because land previously used to grow food is now being utilized to grow crops suitable for bio-fuel. www.scoop.co.nz |

| 593528 | 2007-09-25 09:32:00 | firstly, UV radiation is a proven direct cause of skin cancers. also, sun block only protects against UVb which causes sunburn, but not UVa which causes the cancer. end result is people spending more time in the sun, thus higher cancer rate. ozone hole over NZ and aussie again co-incides with higher cancer rates, but remember we are mostly white nations with outdoor lifestyles (outdoor by the white man's standards that is) secondly, according to the un, gloabally we produce 150% of our food demand, and half of that gets wasted (the us dumped i forget how many hundred thousand tonnes of wheat in the sea last year because it was cheaper than shipping it to africa, or mexico) and thirdly, biofuels is the dumbest "solution" i've ever heard. it continues pollution and is already causing starvation and tequila production is down as agave crops (and corn crops for food) are being replaced with corn for fuel:groan: |

| 593529 | 2007-09-25 10:54:00 | Seems that there's quite a few people in denial. Ozone hole - nah that just some crap invented by scientists to justify their grants. Cutting down the rain forest, sure there's plenty more of that left, and we need palm oil more than rain forest. Pollution - there's nothing wrong with my air (or water), it's just a little smelly and the sky's a little bit gray. Global warming - well it's early days, give it some time before we can really be sure, say a couple hundred more years of monitoring. Those polar bears were getting too lazy walking everywhere anyway - the swim will do them some good.... I think we give mankind the benefit of the doubt too much. When you venture outside of little isolated NZ you start to see some pretty major ecological cock-ups! Actually I think we need to do all we can to reduce pollution and better our environment but I am not going to be like a sheep and believe all the doom and gloom merchants. There is an area the size of Switzerland of rain forest eliminated each year. Not bright. The present craze for planting vast areas of previously food cropped land for bio-fuels may not be as great as we think. Rape seed and corn bio- fuels both create more emissions than ordinary fuel. We need to do more to encourage public transport because each time you lay a new motorway you create several problems. A tap dripping once a second is 7 gallons a week and if there are 2,000,000 households in NZ that is 728,000,000 gallons of water being treated and pumped a year for no good reason. That is assuming the equivalent of one tap per household doing that. I know someone who is a greenie and yet they burn their plastic milk bottles instead of recycling them |
