Disasters make great news, not to mention the money to made from all this excitement........... How true. Apparently prior to the mini- ice age that occurred about the beginning of the 14th century, crops were grown quite successfully on the Pennines, in England, and in the South of Greenland, where Vikings settled. I think there could be as many positives as negatives with global warming, which I believe is overwhelmingly a natural cycle with a little help, perhaps, from the activities of mankind. But, unfortunately, some of a particular political persuasion and dodgy scientists see this as a fantastic opportunity to screw the rest of us. |

| 593492 | 2007-09-22 06:18:00 | "Fifty-five million years ago, a massive release of carbon into the atmosphere caused significant global warming," said Pancost . Exactly . And what have 6 billion humans been busy doing? Releasing stored energy = oil, coal, etc = carbon release . There is nothing natural about the speed of this - we are doing it . Honestly guys, I'm flummoxed that people here who are educated and intelligent still don't get it . I suppose it is because of the dearth of knowledge of science in the general population . There is just so much research which supports evidence of fast changes to our environment that it's impossible to ignore - or so I thought . :stare: |

| 593495 | 2007-09-22 07:25:00 | There are only so many carbon atoms in the world release the lot and learn to live with the effects, end of problem. Then people could whinge about something else. tedheath |

| 593499 | 2007-09-22 09:32:00 | Apparently prior to the mini-ice age that occurred about the beginning of the 14th century, crops were grown quite successfully on the Pennines, in England, and in the South of Greenland, where Vikings settled . . . . . . . . . global warming, which I believe is overwhelmingly a natural cycle with a little help, perhaps, from the activities of mankind . One of the assumptions anti-warming people make is that there is some sort of "natural cycle" which the Earth follows . Ergo, current warming is simply Gaia doing it's thing . Wrong . For every warming and cooling period in the past, there has been a cause . The most dramatic is the meteor strike which wiped out the dinosaurs . More commonly though the cause is volcanic activity (cooling) and increased solar radiation (warming) . These are assuredly natural events . There are no such events to explain the current data . Sea levels have been rising for 300 years . Temperatures at the Earth's surface increased by an estimated 1 . 4°F (0 . 8°C) between 1900 and 2005 . The past decade was the hottest of the past 150 years and perhaps the past millennium . The hottest 22 years on record have occurred since 1980, and 2005 was the hottest on record . Ships can today sail around the Northwest Passage, completely impassable until now . |
