593780 2007-09-22 04:06:00 I'm no economist, and consequently I don't understand what's wrong with having a deficit similar in size (per capita) to the US, UK, and Australia.

If it was the same amount in the green, what would that change?

What is the benefit to NZ of me not buying a computer, stereo, heater, phone (looking around the room), all of which came (directly or indirectly) from China?

593783 2007-09-22 06:35:00 Any time your decisions are made based on how much money you will make (greed) and not from fundamental first principles (planning for the future of the country based on geographical features that will not change, for instance) this is the sort of mess that one will get into. In the case of NZ, well we just followed right wing zealotry out of neo-con think-tanks from USA without any thinking at all, just like sheep, baa baa.

Greedy businesspeople run this country to the detriment of us all. Short term profit over long term planning.

What it means that consequently, NZ does not have to borrow money to pay for that and if you bough NZ made, then you would also be supporting NZ companies and NZ workers. Of course the parts would have to come from overseas but the labour costs benefits would stay here.

As far as I know no consumer electronics are produced in NZ. At least the companies I buy the stuff from profit.

I'm all for keeping money in New Zealand, but Dally said to look around my room starting with the computer, and I did, and I saw nothing that I could have brought NZ-made.

Exactly my point, bad management of the economy has caused the destruction of our fledgling manufacturing base.

Soon we will all be burger flipping, hairdressing, drinking wine and eating cheese from boutique outlets, drinking exotic coffee on pavements,

actually on second thoughts, that doesn't sound too bad a future. ha ha

I quite agree. People don't seem to realise that jobs and businesses are important too, not just cheaper goods for consumers.

But Dally seemed to be implying that it was all the consumers fault for buying computers and things, and that doesn't make sense to me.
