593024 2007-09-20 02:41:00 Oh and Pete O'Neil, are those motherboards better than a PK5?

Im more or less going to follow what george12 described in this thread;

pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

Except ill add an extra 320gb hdd

Looks good for some gaming, and general broadband use etc.. As far as I can tell anyways (not far at all..)

593025 2007-09-20 02:44:00 :lol: Just be careful, the air out of compressors can tend to be a bit damp. A vacuum cleaner on blow is a better bet. On a lot of lappys there is a removable plate on the underside of it, which when taken off will expose the heatsink. Pull teh heatsink off, give it a clean, then wipe the contacting surfaces clean (CPU/heatsink) and apply new thermal grease. Any PC shop will be able to give you a bit of that if you havn't got some already. :thumbs:

Oh right, lucky you said! Cool ill do that, and head down to the local comp shop for some goo. Thanks bud

The Asus P5K I recommend is a P35-based board :D

Thats a good system George recommends. You may want to consider replacing the 8600GT with a 8800GTS if your a gamer, and make sure you get a quality brand PSU.

593028 2007-09-20 06:36:00 Excellent, thank you both so much!

I went into harvey norman today at lunch time, wanting a quote for the list george wrote out, and an extra 320gb hdd, they called back just before five, wanting $2750 without monitor or OS!! I couldnt believe it! I went on pricespy and came out under $1300 incl XP Home.. Insane..:waughh:

What a waste of a lunch break, kicking yourself in the ass would have been more productive. You need your head read for even considering Harvey Normans.

Haha I guess thats deserved...

It was purely out of interest, if it wasnt much more, I would probably have gone with them, as I dont have much experience on the inside of a tower..

Do a quick Google there are plenty of website with guides to building your own PC. Its not really that hard, its pretty obvious where most things plug it etc. You also benefit immensely from it in terms of skills and trouble shooting ability. Worst comes to worst and you cant get all the parts to fit together its shouldn't be hard to find a local techie to do it.

593032 2007-09-20 10:19:00 Yeah absolutely, it'd be a great experience, im looking forward to it. Biggest thing im having trouble with is finding the things on pricespy.. Things like processor and graphics card, theres so many brands etc, and I dont know whether they will all plug into the mobo etc.. Its a brain strain!

I think im going for the 8800gts 640mb, guy selling on trademe for $659, not bad at all

I wonder how a techie manages to fit an AMD A 478 pin CPU into a 939 motherboard?

The parts have to fit together I would hope.

I use ZIF cpus.
