1437353 2017-07-18 23:29:00 We had a Dish TV T1000 set top box which recently died. Two questions: Are they economically repairable, if so who does it (in Christchurch), and: Are there any other brands available?

No company is going to be repairing a $120 freeveiw box, unless its just a external power supply fault.
The companies that used to do TV etc repairs have mostly gone out of buseness, people found it cheaper to replace than repair .

Freeview website shows many of the ~certified~ freeveiw boxes . Start there , heaps to choose from . :)

1437355 2017-07-19 04:02:00 As 1101 said just about any domestic electronics that has stopped working is not economic to repair.

Your model seems to have been discontinued, but the Warehouse seems to still have some,or some newer models. www.thewarehouse.co.nz

some of them run ridiculously hot, so not surprising if they dont last.

Both mine have been just fine, my 1st was one of the original Zinwell boxes, with a horrid reputation for failing.
It just kept going , never any issues. I only replaced it as I wanted a rec to USB option. The newer box has much better picture quality, the Zinwell
may not have been HD .
