1438059 2017-08-07 07:32:00 Is it just me or do other motorists feel like smashing the cyclists off the road when they run red lights and travel on the road when there is a cycle lane next to it?

I feel like doing that to car drivers who go so slowly down hills, park in cycle lanes so I can't use them don't stop at stop signs and run red lights. Yes car drivers do all of those things too so as usual the few idiots on both sides spoil it for the rest of us.

1438061 2017-08-07 09:58:00 Digby, have you not noticed how competive Tauranga is in the congestion stakes?

The Editor of our local paper sums it up well. HERE (www.sunlive.co.nz)

You have anger issues, sure it's stupid but why do you even care when it usually has no direct effect on you.
I don't understand the cyclists that don't use cycle lanes either, but I don't get the urge to hurt them. I ride a bike to work, partly because I can go almost the whole way on a concrete shared footpath/cycle lane. Every day I see several people on road bikes out there amongst the traffic on the busy 80km/h section of wairere drive and I just don't get it. Apparently a minute or two saved on a journey is worth risking your life in traffic over. Legally though they have every right to ride on the road as long as they follow the rules.

Exactly .
for 90% of AKers , buses & trains are simply too far away from homes & work. Hence all the park & rides, with their associated parking issues. Another fail .

When my car was being fixed & I had to take the bus, it was a 30minute walk from the bus stop to work. Thats simply not practical in wet rainy winters
Add to that another 30minute walk from home to a bus stop for many.

Its the era of user pays. Let bus & train users PAY THE FULL COST . No more being subsidized by car owners & petrol taxes.
If the general public knew the true cost , per person, of inner city bus & train trips , there wouldnt be all this talk of adding more train links .
Bus & trains run at a huge loss , topped up by ratepayers .
And lets not compare Ak to other cities that are nothing like the layout of Ak.

Lets make all city council staff use public transport. All of of them. No exceptions . Do that & we'll get an instant change in attitude , one way or the other.

1438066 2017-08-07 23:04:00 I imagine that Amsterdam and Copenhagen are both fairly flat and more compact than Auckland.
And their drivers are probably more courteous.

And do they still cycle when its snowing there? Yes they do. The in-laws are from Holland and they used to cycle all year round, like many others do.

Over there they have a proper setup so the cycleways as well as the roads are kept clear. Not like in Auckland where doing any sort of maintenance is always a mission.

1438067 2017-08-08 06:13:00 The Waterview Tunnel has been a great success, though some claims are not correct - it does not halve the traveling time. In Auckland (the only area where I can claim to comment) the Northern Busway is superb. As I understand it 50% of the traffic over the bridge is by bus. Why would you not! On the occasions that our daughter visits from Wellington she travels by bus and works in the Auckland office - she finds it an excellent way to travel and arrive refreshed.

Am very interested in the fresh ideas of light rail. I don't know enough yet to come to a decision. However, if we had listened to Sir Dove-Meyer Robinson all those years ago ................ !!
