768501 2009-04-25 23:48:00 Hey team, I have a friend in Wellington, a lady with no computer knowledge. She needs (IMHO) a laptop and wireless modem etc.

The machine will be used for email and browsing. It needs to be reliable.

Lets assume $1200 as a price. Noticed the Asus M51VR www.dse.co.nz from earlier threads. At $1500 I suspect its more than she'd choose to spend given that she'll also need a modem etc.

I think she'll need a real person tech support too.

If emails and browsing are the only things it will be used for can I suggest a netbook?

Maybe the eee 1000HA or the Dell Mini 12?

768503 2009-04-26 00:34:00 Toshiba L300's are good entry-level laptops :)

DSE are selling them for $1100 atm.

768506 2009-04-26 05:58:00 I realize it is a few hundred above the amount you think she would be willing to spend, but I would seriously consider recommending a MacBook. It would be easier for her to learn (I know people will object to this, but in my experience teaching people how to use Windows has been much more painful than teaching them how to use Mac OS X) and she won't have to worry about maintaining anti-virus software etc.

Additionally, because new Macs come with iPhoto/iMovie/iWeb/iDVD and Garageband pre-installed I've found that new Mac users are more likely to use their computer for more than they initially intended, vs Windows where in most cases the user would have to go and purchase this software separately.

768507 2009-04-26 07:07:00 The only downside to getting a MacBook is that the lady won't have the knowledge to use the "mainstream" Windows computers. Renmoo (66)

768509 2009-04-26 08:56:00 The cost of a MacBook you could get a way better pc laptop and as for programes you can get FREE programes from www.download.com and heaps of other places as well.
And being mainstream you can get more things for it cheaper and more choice with more brands.

And more places to get it repaired as well,if needed.

And as for Anti-virus just get a good free one and a good free firewall and keep them up to date and run them every so often and dont do anthing dodgy and your sweet as!!!
It's not very hard to do really and it's cheaper then a MacBook as well!!!
