595406 2007-09-27 04:04:00 I just got an invoice from the ACC for $248.27. This seems too high to me,

Can anyone explain this "minimum liable income" deal to me? It says I have to pay levies on a minimum of $15,808 of income. How can they assume I'll make $15,808? I expect my taxable income to be a fair bit less than that and shouldn't have to pay levies on money I won't earn.

This is for the 07/08 financial year.

595407 2007-09-27 04:31:00 I hate ACC, its just another government tax, to support the bleeding sick, half of whom are just milking the system!. SolMiester (139)
595408 2007-09-27 13:30:00 still, it sure beats health insurance which refuses to pay up and won't let you play rugby etc or ride any two wheeled vehicle (especially the motorised sort).

and to be fair, they do usually tax people in the right places (bike rego is $273 thanks to acc, fair enough i guess)

595409 2007-09-27 14:37:00 I don't mind paying ACC. I don't like paying it on income I won't earn though.

Why is the income levy even compulsory? I don't need the ACC to pay 80% of my income if I break a leg or something. How is that worth $250 a year?

This is compulsory and car insurance is optional?

.

You ring them and tell them you are self-employed PART TIME. Thats 30 hours or less, and they work it out on your actual IRD declared earnings, rather than their greedy minimum.

595413 2007-09-28 01:08:00 I used to object most strongly to paying ACC levies (as I'm self-employed, I pay Employer AND Employee levies!) of around $2000 a year. But since my bicycle accident at the end of June, I am slightly less uncomfortable, since I managed to 'get by' on what they paid me while I was recovering for a couple of months.

I'd still prefer to be paying a levy/insurance premium to a non-monopoly organisation though - bring back competition!!!

I did, and the guy seemed rather confused and said that my tax code shouldn't be 'M' because I'm under 18. He then made some changes and said that he didn't know if they would be accepted by his superiors or not, and that I'd either end up having to pay the whole bill or nothing.

Why should your age make a difference to what your tax code is? M just means it's your primary source of income, and that you don't have a student loan (or fit into any other criteria).
