| 595505 | 2007-09-29 12:34:00 | [ QUOTE=rob_on_guitar;597585]As for the other comments of disarming the offender, ever tried doing it to someone who is amping? not an easy task. The loser got wasted. Good job. Are we to assume you speak from personal experience Rob? If not, why should we pay any attention to your pointless comment? Martynz[/QUOTE] Well have you? The comment is about as pointless as all the comments about cops being armed and the rest of the crap. Yay lets go smash up cars and stuff and threaten people with hammers, nothing will happen, get a life. |

| 595506 | 2007-09-29 12:43:00 | We already have a right to bear arms in NZ but only rifles and shotguns. I would just like the right to carry a pistol like our armed police. tedheath You Sir, (in this case) should be shot! The moment you start making it legal for citizens, criminal or not, to carry weapons, pistols in particular, you will automatically have a nation as screwed up as USA. Something Im pretty sure the majority of NZ DOESN'T want. |

So you do admit that you made a pointless comment then. There is definitely a point in questioning the level of force that the NZ Police use in response to violent situations. I don't think this thread is pointless. I value the opportunity to discuss these matters so easily with such a large range of people. This sort of public forum simply didn't exist when I was twenty years old. If you think most of the comments here are pointless - well, it rather begs the question of why you keep posting, doesn't it...? |

| 595508 | 2007-09-29 20:01:00 | The first question which came to my mind was why was the officer armed? I dare say we'll find out eventually . No doubt we will but I expect the fact that the offender was armed with a hammer and going on a smashing rampage had something to do with it . I would like to know whether a police dog handler was summonsed but even if it had been I guess the officer armed himself knowing there would be a delay before a dog arrived on the scene . However leaving that aside it isn't reasonable to limit the use of firearms to be only deployed against offenders with firearms . A hammer, golf club, machete, or a baseball bat are all deadly weapons in certain circumstances . The police have a duty to protect the public and to protect themselves . No one has yet mentioned that the offender smashed the window of a car that had two occupants in it just prior to being shot . Whether this is a media fabrication or not I wouldn't know but that is what was reported somewhere . The use of pepper spray has its limits - offenders sufficently enraged by P for example can overcome the discomfort . It is a pity tasers aren't in general issue but hopefully that will come . They aren't perfect but better than killing someone . Pepper spray is only used in certain circumstances . It's not much good if the wind is blowing the wrong way otherwise it will miss its target or, even worse, blow back into the officer's own eyes . Tasers also have their limitations . They have only one chance to hit their target and if the officer in this instance used one and missed the consequences could have been rather dire . Still, it would have been preferable to have had the option of using one rather than the firearm . We can all be armchair critics but none of us were there and none of us were in that policeman's shoes . Whether he did right or wrong will no doubt be debated until the cows come home but it's something he has to live with for the rest of his life . |

You guys sound so anti cop although I know you would use them as soon as you needed to. Good for the cop to use force, the level of it, sure its extreme nobody likes to get shot, but then not everybody is going crazy smashing cars and threatening people are they? Some of you should just get off your own high horse before pointing fingers from your own armchairs. |

| 595510 | 2007-09-29 20:25:00 | Nobody worries that a normally unarmed police force manages to attend a domestic incident and shoots dead a guy that was not even in possession of of - or presenting - a firearm? why do people think firearms are that deadly? knife attacks are much much worse . a hammer is more likely to delivery fatal blows than someone trying to use a firearm . the other thing . . . . how many here have actually been in the cops shoes, so to speak, and been faced with some nut intent on destroying everything around them? also by the media reports (which is not always accurate) it sounds more like a case of "suicide by cop" . something a certain gun store has had twice . no doubt this growing trend is something the police want to put a lid on . |

| 595511 | 2007-09-29 20:31:00 | the other thing.... how many here have actually been in the cops shoes, so to speak, and been faced with some nut intent on destroying everything around them? well....seeing as you asked, quite a few times. Whats your point? |

| 595512 | 2007-09-29 20:43:00 | why do people think firearms are that deadly? knife attacks are much much worse . a hammer is more likely to delivery fatal blows than someone trying to use a firearm . You make a very good point . I think we should get rid of our infantry divisions and replace them with hammer and knife divisions . Our army could take over the world! the other thing . . . . how many here have actually been in the cops shoes, so to speak, and been faced with some nut intent on destroying everything around them? And your point is . . . . ? I haven't been in a Catholic Priest's position either - but I most definitely reserve the right to remark when they sexually misbehave . also by the media reports (which is not always accurate) it sounds more like a case of "suicide by cop" . something a certain gun store has had twice . no doubt this growing trend is something the police want to put a lid on . So now you're making things up . So it's alright when you do it, is it? |

So somebody who remarked that "the loser got wasted - good job" - is now telling others to get off their high horse...! Are you sure you're not actually a drummer, Rob? |
