| 595499 | 2007-09-29 09:52:00 | Wow. The level of wit and conversation on this thread... A guy is dead. So far there have been statements of certainty about what he was doing and how he deserved it from people who weren't there and who get their news from the television. One member who says the dead guy was a loser. Maybe he knew him - but I'm pretty sure that he just pulled the comment out of his fundament because it sounded good at the time. One member who thinks the cops are always right and that anybody who disagrees is a "goody do gooder". Nobody worries that a normally unarmed police force manages to attend a domestic incident and shoots dead a guy that was not even in possession of of - or presenting - a firearm? |

There is no point in passing comments/judgement on something nobody here knows about(THE FACTS),We have only heard what has been said on the news. The so called eye witnesses, all sound over dramatized, as to be expected from such an event. Firearms are carried a lot more frequently by police then you may think, we no longer are an unarmed police force. |

The loser got wasted. Good job.[/QUOTE] Are we to assume you speak from personal experience Rob? If not, why should we pay any attention to your pointless comment? Martynz |

The first question which came to my mind was why was the officer armed? I dare say we'll find out eventually. However leaving that aside it isn't reasonable to limit the use of firearms to be only deployed against offenders with firearms. A hammer, golf club, machete, or a baseball bat are all deadly weapons in certain circumstances. The police have a duty to protect the public and to protect themselves. The use of pepper spray has its limits - offenders sufficently enraged by P for example can overcome the discomfort. It is a pity tasers aren't in general issue but hopefully that will come. They aren't perfect but better than killing someone. Police are not trained to run away and fight another day. Their job is to actively contain and apprehend offenders, especially violent offenders. What would we think if the officer had backed away and this guy had turned on a bystander killing that person? Obviously there were bystanders from the number of witnesses. |

The cops are going to keep lowering the bar, soon if say attacked by a banana weilding person they will still let rip with 4 rounds of 9mm soft nose . Once we have got used to that anyone who attacks them with a feather is going to be shot in the chest as well . Where will it end? . tedheath |
