595475 2007-09-28 11:38:00 The varying eyewitness accounts make you wonder about the accuracy of "history" as we know it. If we can't accurately describe an event from yesterday then what really happened say 1000 years ago??? andrew93 (249)
595476 2007-09-28 19:48:00 If the police are now allowed to carry guns for defence citizens should be allowed to as well.

tedheathSo how does one distinguish between a citizen, and a potential criminal?. Or should criminals be allowed to carry guns too? In your world ted, I suppose a criminal could sue for discrimination for not being allowed to carry a weapon??

That will make NZ as bad as America in terms of gun use.

595479 2007-09-28 21:36:00 The theory has been since 1880s NZ police arent armed therefore citizens dont need handguns. The police now want to carry guns and misuse them. Fair enough but give us the right to bear arms like usa.

595480 2007-09-28 21:49:00 Pity you were not there Ted, you could have stepped in between the officer and the maniac, and while said maniac was pounding your skull into bite-sized pieces the officer could have swung round behind him, kicked him in the nuts and slapped on the handcuffs while he was writhing in the slightly damp patch created by your brain spillage.

You would have received a posthumous Darwinian Award for your heroism of course, and we'd all be saying how peaceful it was without you and what a pity it was that you couldn't receive your award in person, but Metla picked it up on your behalf and made a fine valedictory speech about how we'd never forget whatsisname. Then we'd all go have a beer and take bets on how long the next idiot would survive.

Wish you'd been around when the samurai sword swinger was on the loose, would have saved the cops a whole heap of trouble with you sorting him out.

If supporting the right of inflamed or deranged individuals to attack citizens (or Police) with hammers or other implements of destruction is the voice of reason, then we are definitely buggered, in both senses of the word. And you can go first when the buggery begins.

Cheers

tedheathThere is an assumption there that the Police are "misusing" their issued weapons . Haven't seen it yet myself - as far as I can see they are trying to carry out the duty they have been assigned - and using their weapons for the purpose for which they were designed: To protect the public against idiots like this hammer-nutter and the golf club idiot a few years ago . (It's a pity they didn't get to the samurai-guy at the appropriate time and save the taxpayer a few bucks) .

Yeah - people should have freedom to do what they want, but with that freedom comes responsibility, otherwise you have anarchy .

If the hammer-nutter had been advancing on you in your capacity of a member of the public, I am sure you would be thanking the cop now for saving your brains from being bashed out - despite your obvious dislike for the Police .

Tazers, however, would be a better choice - at least they don't kill, but then all the armchair critics would still be on the case every time some idiot got what was coming to him . . .

595482 2007-09-28 21:59:00 We already have a right to bear arms in NZ but only rifles and shotguns. I would just like the right to carry a pistol like our armed police.

Just reading through this thread confirms that the Police have just as many (if not more) armchair supporters as they do critics....
