Yes legod I knew exactly what was meant but I am amazed at the blissful ignorance with which some posters on this forum choose to disregard the original settlers of this country....and as Metla quite rightly pointed out, places like America and NZ were discovered long before Columbus and Tasman...... Also I do not describe myself as a Pakeha although others would assume I am. OK. We change the flag maybe! MY only real problem with the current New Zealand flag is that the flag does not look too different to the Australian one. It IS different, of course. I think we need to start a new thread for all the designers on PressF1 to put together a new New Zealand flag. Then explain the reasons for having symbols on the resultant flag. Will I salute the new flag? Maybe and maybe not. Eventually I think we may become a Republic. Have you noticed that some Republics become Dictatorships? Do you believe in the English system of Justice? What about the Privy Council and the Magna Carta from which our justice system stemed? I could go on but this is enough for now.	Sweep (90)

I am happy to be called Pakeha because that belongs to the country I belong to. I don't consider myself to be European. That went long ago! It becomes clearer when you go to Europe and figure out how different we are. I would be really happy to see designs for a new flag. There are some good ideas around. Personally, I really like the Maori sovereignty flag, but realise that won't go down too well with lots of people. I also agree it needs to be better differentiated from the Australian flag. I think we will become a republic after the current Queen dies, and the last of the old soldiers have gone. It is only a matter of time. I doubt I will see it, though I would like to. No doubt some scumbag politicians will pull the same stroke here that Johnny Howard did in Oz (the president would be elected solely by politicians) which scuppered the referendum over there. Yes, some republics become dictatorships. So do some monarchies. I believe in aspects of the British legal system, particularly those that have been adapted to our use. I have serious doubts about the adversary system though, and think the French inquisitorial system has a lot to recommend it in some areas of law (we already use aspects of that system in child protection cases). I would like to see more use of restorative justice as well. I do not support appeals to a court in another country, so am a supporter of the final court of appeal being here where decisions are based on our cultural understandings. However, my faith got a bit shaken recently... Magna Carta is good! I saw a copy a few years back (like the Treaty of Waitangi there are several) and nearly went down on my knees.
