| 595470 | 2007-09-28 09:50:00 | Never thought I would find myself in agreement with tedheath. Just as well there were'nt any armed police on the streets of Torquay when Basil Fawlty was beating the s*** out of his mini with a shrub. Seriously though, is there no more civilized way of dealing with this sort of situation? Or maybe I've made the wrong choice in moving to a country apparently inhabited by rednecks. Martynz |

| 595472 | 2007-09-28 11:27:00 | If shooting unarmed people is the voice of reason we are buggered tedheath Pity you were not there Ted, you could have stepped in between the officer and the maniac, and while said maniac was pounding your skull into bite-sized pieces the officer could have swung round behind him, kicked him in the nuts and slapped on the handcuffs while he was writhing in the slightly damp patch created by your brain spillage. You would have received a posthumous Darwinian Award for your heroism of course, and we'd all be saying how peaceful it was without you and what a pity it was that you couldn't receive your award in person, but Metla picked it up on your behalf and made a fine valedictory speech about how we'd never forget whatsisname. Then we'd all go have a beer and take bets on how long the next idiot would survive. Wish you'd been around when the samurai sword swinger was on the loose, would have saved the cops a whole heap of trouble with you sorting him out. If supporting the right of inflamed or deranged individuals to attack citizens (or Police) with hammers or other implements of destruction is the voice of reason, then we are definitely buggered, in both senses of the word. And you can go first when the buggery begins. Cheers Billy 8-{) :groan: |

| 595473 | 2007-09-28 11:33:00 | So exactly how well do we train our cops then? They get trained in unarmed combat - and it's a little more than just an afternoon session. NZ Police are not armed with guns for normal duty. However, the officer in question shot the guy - but not because he lacked the skill in unarmed combat - it's because he was armed with a gun which means that from that point onwards he would use either the threat of firing the gun - or he would actually fire the gun - but he would not use unarmed combat training or resort to baton, taser or pepper-spray. Which begs the first question; Why was he attending the incident armed with a gun? |

Since when does expressing an opinion about the NZ Police Force's use of force equate with, "supporting the right of inflamed or deranged individuals to attack citizens (or Police)" ??? |
