War is a terrible thing, and we should alway remember those that sacrificed their lives, so that we can enjoy the freedom we do today.

Thank !@#$ there is someone here with some brains.

595723 2007-09-29 03:43:00 I don't think so........you might want to check your NZ history.......

Well - Abel Taz was first here, wasn't he? (from Europe that is)

Probably the Dutch and French got here before the British, but it was the British who colonized NZ extensively, claimed it as part of the British Empire and shaped our culture over the vast bulk of NZ's short history. Of course, things have changed a bit since, but then so has Britain. Even more so in many ways.

No arguments there.......:)

What I took exception to was maccrazy suggesting NZ was settled by the British. What about the settlers before the British? ;)

595725 2007-09-29 04:04:00 yeah well you probably know what he meant.
Besides, Maori weren't first here either, were they? Not that I really know. Someone here I'm sure will know more.

595726 2007-09-29 04:29:00 AFAIK, it was the following order:

Unknown
Moriori
Maori
Chinese (1421 - traders only)
Abel Tasman (discoverer only, on behalf of "Europe")
James Cook and the French (followed by settlement by the British)

The British were the first non-Stone Age settlers. (That'll get someone's dander up! :D )

595727 2007-09-29 04:41:00 Always amazes me how Europeans can claim to have discovered something that was already populated.

And this goes for all their "discoveries" including the likes of america.

Perhaps if they lost all their text books they could rush out for some more discovering, indulge in a bit of rape and pillage, top it off with some land grabbing and genocide.

Human Nature: Like it or loathe it, you can't change it. (apologies to Marvin the Paranoid Android for the paraphrase) ;)

595729 2007-09-29 06:46:00 It means discovered by civilised people.

Isn't this happening in the Middle East today?

Yes legod I knew exactly what was meant but I am amazed at the blissful ignorance with which some posters on this forum choose to disregard the original settlers of this country....and as Metla quite rightly pointed out, places like America and NZ were discovered long before Columbus and Tasman......
