A legitimate complaint has to be laid before the police can confiscate someone's firearms otherwise any silly fool can tell the cops just out of spite. A Firearms Licence is a privilege - not a right. The Police can suspend or revoke it at their discretion if it is their opinion that you have become an unsuitable person to be in possession of firearms (or a firearms licence). |

I had a work colleague that had his firearms taken off him when he stared running around the backyard naked with his shotgun. I also have a mate that is currently going through separation, who has a protection order out against him, and he still has his firearms. Whats his name and address |

| 595457 | 2007-09-27 22:13:00 | If the local police are informed you are going through a divorce/seperation your guns are toast buddy. tedheath police will only take firearms if there has been previous violence or the misses complains. it not unknown for partners to do a little pay back by lying to police to get them to confiscate the guns. most knowledgeable guys will sell their guns off or hand them into police for safe keeping. one less thing for the partner to sh*t stir about. as far as the shooting goes..... as a rule police have a minimum safe distance from the bad guy, which is usually the reaction time from them lunging at them and the police being able to fire. can't remember the distance off hand. basically if BG gets to close to cops they shoot. also, going by reports by cops, blunt weapons and especially knives are more feared than firearms. with knife fights the winner goes to A&E. |

| 595459 | 2007-09-27 22:47:00 | The domestic shootings in NZ usually follow a standard NATO pattern, wife leaves husband, wife shacks up with another dude, husband gets mad and has been drinking, goes around to said dudes place shoots him and his old dragon. Then sometimes himself. I have just rung the police they said anyone with a protection order against him, no exceptions has his guns seized. tedheath |

"Trained" policeman shoots a man on the street with a hammer and its hunky dory the guy deserved it etc etc. There sure a lot of heartless people here. On this unique occasion I agree with Ted - him who loves to quote himself - Heath. The current NZ police system is bordering on the rampaging model set by the USA and third world countries, where shoot first is the nature, possibly for the simple retarded pleasure of shooting at a live victim. Sure, the victim wasn't exactly picking buttercups, but I mean... worse case scenario, the guy had a hammer above his head and approached a cop. What the...! In a fairly recent case, the guy who defended himself at the gunstore in Auckland had to endure an arduous proccess because he shot someone attempting to potentially kill him. The murderous copper should be facing the same legal proccesses. NZ cops are too happy handed with their weapons and they need a maturity test before even being allowed to handle one. |

Having a semi auto 9mm pistol is real power. I am really anoyed at the moment because cops in nz arent supposed to be armed. They are supposed to use their brains and defuse situations or retreat and get backup. Last thing we want here is American style shootups like when that negro got waxed on his stag do. They fired an incredible amount of bullets. Presently crooks when they are out doing what crooks do they dont need to carry arms for protection, if they do because of the "got gun will use it" theory we may be in for a torrid time. If that cop fired 4 bullets and 2 hit where did those other 2 go? hopefully not into the bedroom of some sleeping kid. tedheath |

Men going through a divorce/separation don't automatically have a protection order against them. You are talking about two entirely different matters. I don't dispute that the police should confiscate someone's firearms if they have a protection order or if the police are called to a domestic incident. I know a woman who is permanently disabled after surviving being shot by her jealous ex-husband. Her partner, whom she moved in with after the marriage broke up, wasn't so lucky. He's dead. |

| 595464 | 2007-09-28 06:33:00 | "Trained" policeman shoots a man on the street with a hammer.... tedheath I commend the Officer for his ingenuity, to turn a hammer into a firearm then use it to defend himself against a raving lunatic was in the geatest traditions of kiwi resourcefulness. And Ted, had that Officer been a member of your family and you were now planning his funeral, you would be singing a different song altogether. "Madman kills unarmed Police Officer with hammer" is a much less satisfactory headline than "Police officer defends himself against madman with hammer and prevents further tragedy" and lest we forget, the officer is a victim ass well, do you think he'll go home and act like life goes on just the same. He will live with that incident for the rest of his life and will always wonder why he didn't have a taser instead. You will forget all about it in a week or so and go on to complain about something else. Cheers Billy 8-{) :illogical |
