767949 2009-04-26 00:11:00 I've just tried the live CD of the latest Ubuntu, and while it all seems to work, it won't be my OS of choice until it is more user friendly. For instance, if I want to join my Windows workgroup, I have to first find, then edit some configuration files - where are a series of easy to use wizards to perform that sort of function? Tony (4941)
767950 2009-04-26 00:23:00 You dont have to edit config files with everything (in Linux). It does have windows, where you can select / tick whatever as well

It was actually pretty easy to change it so it was part of a network. (in the previous versions that is). I've got the latest ISO's, but dont have any blanks, to test them

The printer I've got here took a while to configure, but it did work. Some things do take longer than others to configure (so it'll work).

I might try Wine in it, then you can still have the best of both worlds. Pity, Wine doesnt work in 64 bit

767953 2009-04-26 04:41:00 Hopefully not a stupid question, can you also set Ubuntu to look like windows with the start menu?? convair (13650)
767954 2009-04-26 04:46:00 Yes, you can opt for the KDE interface.(maybe kubuntu?)

or, try this:

They can all be on different work groups but still see each other, although I personally have a home work group setup for ease of sharing saves a few extra clicks

767957 2009-04-26 06:31:00 Apparently I have heard but not really explored that computers on a network do not need to be on the same work group name to share stuff, but from my understanding it takes a few more mouse clicks to navigate to the said shared stuff, instead of the 2 clicks it takes me to click network places then the folder I am looking at gary67 (56)

This is correct. That said, most people who don't care about workgroups tend to be the ones who access shares via the run box (\\ip.addy.of.pc\sharename or \\pcname\sharename). You can't drive the run box with a mouse, but it's usually a hell of a lot faster than clicking through the network browser.
