768511 2009-04-26 09:24:00 Thanks everyone. The thing to bear in mind is this lady, like most of the population over 40, simply uses a pc at work, and wants to do ordinary stuff at home. Turn it on, it works.

So while a Mac-book might be a great idea, she isn't going to have the confidence to make the change.

Because this is a computer enthusiasts site I think we sometimes forget that most people don't care about computers. Pcs are like TVs - turn them on, they should work. Configure email client??!! What the heck does that mean? What's a browser?

I'll happily refer her to Wainuitec, feel much better having someone she can ask for advice. Being in Invercargill I'm not much help. :D

I'm a PC user, but find myself more and more disappointed with them and have started suggesting my friends (who aren't computer experts) get Macs when they replace their PC. I'd never use a mac though, I don't believe in locking everything down.

A mac is like an appliance like a toaster - it just works. When it dies, you throw it away and get a new one (I'm sure they are upgradable, but it doesn't seem as easy as a PC...)
A PC (regardless of whether it is built by yourself or by HP/Dell/etc) is a kitset toaster. HP/Dell simply puts together the kitset and sells it to you, or you buy the parts yourself and put it together. Only computer experts should use PCs unfortunately, until microsoft and -all- pc hardware manufacturers can coordinate their efforts as well as Apple.

how is it much better?

the processor may be a little bit better version of the celeron, but lets be honest its a celeron at the end of the day.

also 2GB of ram, isnt going to be a big issue in this case because of what the user is going to use it for.

the Asus has bigger HDD and also better warranty.

if you added an extra 1GB of RAM the Asus would probably retail for $1349

whereas if you were to add extra HDD, and then add extra year warranty that would push the price of your toshiba to over $1349
