767866 2009-04-25 06:42:00 While this is not much help - I have looked and Many have had the same problem - Since WMP is a inbuilt part of Vista, and cant be removed, there is also no download that I could find that MS give out.

Some people have simply given up and used another player - the other option is to do a complete reinstall.

ONE thing that might work - and worth a try - Click start, type in cmd in the search results, RIGHT click CMD/Run The select "Run as Administrator", type in sfc /scannow <Press Enter> note space between the c /s

Let it run through and hopefully it will repair WMP.

There is one other thing I'm going to try as I also have a knackered WMP on one of the workshop Vista PC's - Ill post back if it works (the repair)

767867 2009-04-25 09:52:00 Here is the fix for WMP in Vista from Microsoft:-

"Run an in-place installation of Windows Vista to repair
all applications.
To do this, boot as normal from hard drive. Now insert
Vista DVD and run the Windows Vista Setup again from
within Windows Vista. This will repair all applications,
including Media Player and Media Centre by replacing the
damaged files. It might be possible that you will need to
install a device driver again if you have installed drivers
for your hardware manually but normally all installed
applications will not be harmed by this repair".

I was under the impression that running Windows Vista Setup
again would wipe out the previous install but obviously not
according to this MS info.
By the way, if you recently installed Sat For PC you will prob
find this the cause of WMP malfunction and uninstalling this
will fix WMP 11. ( many cases reported).

767870 2009-04-25 11:54:00 What ever you do just be VERY careful - the article linked in Blams post - as it says to do the repair install
You must have Retail Full or Upgrade Vista installation DVD to do this MOST people will have an OEM install of Vista, thats is of course unless you paid for a FULL BOXED RETAIL version, which cost a hell of a lot more.

Do it wrong, and you will wipe your complete HDD and lose every bit of data and programs on the drive.

I was under the impression that running Windows Vista Setup
again would wipe out the previous install but obviously not
according to this MS info Yeah right  Just got a customers PC last week - they thought the same thing after reading several articles, and the local Computer "Expert" thought he knew what he was doing - guess what ALL data is gone.

767871 2009-04-25 13:09:00 Thanks for the warning, I respect your experiece
in these matters.
Wouldn't it be nice if MS were a bit more precise
and exlplanatory with their info.

767872 2009-04-25 22:26:00 Its actually a pain in the backside, not being able to do a repair install the same as way you can in previous versions of Windows, XP, 2000 etc. Something to do with the file structure in Vista. wainuitech (129)
767873 2009-04-25 23:12:00 Is this worth considering ?
