595702 2007-09-28 02:40:00 I have rarely read such a pile of bollocks in a thread on this site.

1. It is called the Union flag, not the Union Jack.

2. And that was a "union" that was created by attempted genocide of the Celtic nations by the English - another form of rape where the union was without consent. Notice how the Celtic nations have been attempting to achieve devolution for centuries, and as far as the Scots are concerned they have nearly achieved it.

3. The so-called United Kingdom is not our motherland - never was, never will be. Aotearoa is our motherland.

4. If it was our motherland, we would be entitled to go back and live there. Nope - I have no rights over there.

5. I have had two trips to Britain in the last 3 years. What I observed was that we simply do not exist as far as the average plonker over there is concerned. They have no interest in our existence except as sporting opponents. The only reference I saw to NZ in the news on our first trip (a month) was to us being defeated by the Aussies in one of the games the English invented in the intervals between trying to dominate their neighbours. There was no reference at all to anything in the southern hemisphere in the second trip (last year - 6 weeks). In fact the only references to anything outside of the island nation was when Britain was affected by the event. If there was another war that required the English to call on us for more cannon fodder, we would soon hear from them, but otherwise they are part of Europe, not the South Pacific.

6. "A country that goes changing its flag ... is unstable in what it believes in". What utter and complete crap. There are a multitude of countries in the past century that have changed their flags because they have achieved independence etc, and they are demonstrating that they have finally gained the ability to express their self belief. Usually because they have thrown off the shackles of colonisation (either internal or external) or other forms of oppression. Ireland is a good example. The only troubles on that island since they got rid of English oppression have occurred in the part of that Ireland that England still colonises - the north.

7. "We shouldn't change our flag because people fought under it" or words to that effect. More garbage. We fought those wars out of loyalty to Britain - in WW1 we even allowed them to command our troops and murder them by firing squad. Never again. The current flag is a reminder of our colonisation and the loss of two generations of leaders. Patriotism is not dependent upon reminders of the past - it is about loyalty to the country of your birth, and a desire to hold on to the present.

I am with beeswax. It is way beyond time that we stood on our own feet and stopped tugging the forelock to the Queen and the other chinless wonders that care less about us than we do about them. Even the Queen has said we are welcome to stay, but equally welcome to become a republic - it is over to us to decide.

You wait until the next generation of royals dangle their feet from the throne of England - you won't see us for dust. It is only loyalty to and affection for the present Queen that is keeping us in thrall.

Why on earth would anyone want to stay tied to that mad outfit on the other side of the Earth? All the best ones left anyway (with the exception of tedheath perhaps)...

595704 2007-09-28 03:42:00 Hahahaha! You crack me up. You are trolling, right?

I don't believe god was or is English and has any more belief in monarchy than I do! Don't hold your breath that any fantasy of yours will be dashing around saving her.

Strewth, my grandchildren are seventh generation Pakeha. How long do you expect them to share your fantasy life about forelock tugging to a foreign monarch?

595705 2007-09-28 04:48:00 Aren't the monarchy all derived from Germanic descent?. I seem to recall they have German names somewhere in their lineage,or they frequently married into the German monarchy, or married someone from there. intel hunter (6666)

They are German, and their family name was Hanover until WW1, when the anti German sentiment caused them to change their name to Windsor (the present Queen's name is Elizabeth Windsor). That is the same time as when German sausage became Belgian sausage; German biscuits became Belgian biscuits, and German Shepherd dogs became Alsatians.

The first Hanover to become King of England couldn't even speak English. But those are the ways of the chinless wonders...

The present Queen's uncle (Duke of Windsor, ex King Edward) was in sympathy with the fascists in the 1930s and wanted Hitler and the English to get together to oppose the Russian communists. He was a bit of an embarrassment and they gave him the flick so he spent his remaining years in exile in France.

595708 2007-09-28 06:28:00 New Zealand needs to at least get it's legal system in order before it cuts the umbilical cord with England. How many injustices have there been which have to be overturned by the High Court in England, at least one I can think of and that is one too many.

Also we would do well not to follow in Amerika's footsteps and use that unhappy land as a role model. Our cops are shooting people now for walking down the street with a hammer. 2 or 3 cops could have taken him on with riot batons, rather than just killing him.

I think that if there were 2 or 3 cops present that is what they may have done.
But I'm sure the cop couldn't ask the fellow with the hammer, just wait a minute, just waiting for backup, so then 3 of us can beat the crap out of you with battons instead of me shooting you.

595710 2007-09-28 07:39:00 Then they could have just shadowed him down the street until more cops arrived, no way, we all know what probably happened here why do you continue to ignore the obvious explanation that they are just power tripping and trigger happy and itching to use their new gear. zqwerty (97)
