594734 2007-09-25 09:50:00 I wasn't endangering anybody any more 100m before the sign than 100m after it. This was after all the houses had stopped. The only thing anywhere near me was the car in front of me, which was doing the same speed as me.

The only real problem with what you're saying is: where do you draw the line? How far from the posted speed sign should the speed limit come into effect?

Good point.

I just start speeding up when I'm close to the sign. It depends - if it's an onramp to a motorway, I'd start speeding up as soon as I was on the onramp. In this case I began to accelerate when I was free of houses etc and the sign was about 5 seconds away.

I was doing about 50-55 before I started to speed up, so I was accelerating quite slowly.

594736 2007-09-25 09:59:00 Forget any idea that speed cameras about road safety, they are a naked revenue gathering operation, as are many of the enforcement tactics of the traffic division of the NZ Police. Traffic infringement revenue is a budget item and the Police are required to achieve budget. Mobile traffic patrols were expected to generate 32 tickets in an 8 hour shift, and there was talk a couple years ago of raising the number. The unhappy fact about traffic infringements, is that to defend oneself against an infringement is generally considerably more expensive than the potential fine, so most drivers just take it on the chin and pay up.
About 5 years ago my 22 year old son was stopped at 11pm one night by the Sheraton Hotel by a traffic patrol, when he asked what the problem was he was advised that he was travelling to close to the car in front on the motorway at Greenlane and handed an infringement notice. I asked him if he noticed a patrol car alongside him on the motorway, and he was emphatic that there had not been a patrol car alongside him at any time on the motorway. We notified the Police that the matter would be defended, and received two letter from the Traffic Enforcement Branch, advising that we would be ill advised to do so, and that the penalty would not only be higher, but we would have costs awarded against us. My son appeared in court, pleaded not guilty and a date was set for a hearing. A solicitor friend of mine requested discovery from the police, and they withdrew the prosecution - vindicated - cost to us $250.00 - Justice NZ style!
Another revenue gathering example. the elderly mother of a friend received a ticket for failing to indicate that she was leaving the motorway from the left hand south bound lane of the Southern Motorway at Manurewa - the left hand lane terminates some 250 metres beyond the Manurewa exit - Fine $150. It is incidents like these that make normally law abiding citizens anti police, and it is all revenue driven.

594737 2007-09-25 10:05:00 I partially agree with you. The fact that speed cameras exist is great. But I don't agree with placing them in areas that are clearly deisgned to make the most money.

They should put them in high crash areas and schools. Speeding up a bit early won't kill anyone, but not slowing down a few k's down the road when it turns into a school zone certainly could. They should put the camera there instead.

594739 2007-09-25 10:18:00 Speed doesn't kill.

Drink Drive kills.
Fatigue kills.
Idiot behind the wheel kills.
Our 3rd world crap road with a magic white lines that separate oncoming traffic kills.

I'm going to ask for a photo to see just how close I really was, and I'll probably just pay it, but I'll decide that after I see the photo.

594741 2007-09-25 10:50:00 The results of the poll are rather interesting. george12 (7)
594742 2007-09-25 10:54:00 Why dont you do like a lot of the young drivers do, and start racking them up, see how long it takes you to reach 20k Rob99 (151)
594743 2007-09-25 10:59:00 The cops round here (top of the south) have been giving out tickets for "unsecured spare wheel"!

Speed can't kill, Speed is a scalar quantity and therefore has no direction. Velocity would be more appropriate, however it's still a nonsensical phrase either way. It's like saying weight kills, or time kills
