768491 2009-04-26 00:07:00 My PC is running windows xp and I have been doing a lot of video conversions. Lately I have had a problem with these problems crashing (usually when I go to load a file) and then found that when I attempted to use Windows explorer to transfer a file (to a media player or mp3 player) via USB Explorer would freeze and have to deleted (usually removing icons from my desktop etc.) Often I needed to reboot.

I gave up[ on Windows explorer and downloaded Universal explorer. This worked for a while and then ended up freezing, etc. Same problem.

I tried installing windows XP on a separate formatted HD and things worked for a while and then these same problems reoccurred.

This suggest to me the problem isn't with a corrupted file, or similar. But maybe something wrong with the PC itself. Connections or something.

The PC is 5 years old - same age as the one on board the Mars Rover. That's having problems too. So perhaps I should be replacing my PC.

Can anyone suggest anything elseI could do to fix the problem?

768492 2009-04-26 00:13:00 Could possible be the RAM or the hard drive.

Download memtest (www.memtest86.com), extract the iso and burn it to a blank cd. Try imgburn and select "Burn image to CD" at the menu screen if you don't have an image burning program already.

Then go to command prompt and go chkdsk C: /f /r

Replace C with System drive letter.

Does it happen when copying from flash drive to flash drive(i.e when not aaccessing Pc's HD)

768493 2009-05-08 03:24:00 Things are quite variable. Recently things were going well. I changed to using Any Video. But now occasionally I find that explorer crashes when I go to use it. Usually when I go to the directory on the hard drive where my converted video files are. Sometimes I find there is a file there which may have been corrupted, didn't convert properly, etc. I find that I can't do anything with the file (it claims to be being used) and then explorer crashes.

Could it be that some mistake during video conversion produces a corrupted file that then interferes with explorer?

I installed some new RAM about 6 months ago. I ran memtest then and it did sow some areas - but couldn't interpret the message. Perhaps I will run it again. Problem is it takes so long.

768494 2009-05-08 03:55:00 A file maybe corrupt, thats usually why explorer crashes.

WHAT addons / programs have you installed recently?

When it crashes, go to event viewer (start/run type eventvwr). Look under application or system/ Look for any errors relating to it (when it happens). Double click on it click on the icon under the down arrow, paste it here.

768495 2009-05-08 04:52:00 Try setting all your folder icons to icons, some maybe thumbs which could be causing your problems.

Open My Computer, set to list view.
From the tools menu select Folder Options
Click the view tab then click Apply to all folders

See if that sorts it.

768497 2009-05-19 00:47:00 Thats whats crashing sut_diskexplorer.exe. I dont know what this is or belongs to. BUT if its what youre using, you'll probably have to uninstall it then reinstall. If that doesnt fix it, you may have to use something else

Its probably that uninversal explorer thats crashing. And it looks like shmedia.dll is also crashing, thats part of XP. Go to start / run and type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll. its probably the video files youre converting, that are stuffed

768498 2009-05-19 00:59:00 I think the second example relates to windows explorer itself.
I had switched to Universal explorer because of the problems - and then that started playing up.
Now I have switched to Ultra Explorer which is OK but may play up with time.

The other problem I get is when installing a new programme I get the error message "CoCreateInstance Failed; code 0X800408154 Class not registered."

And at the same time Personal Brain - which I use and love - is no longer able to link/open applications and files on my PC (but is OK with websites).

And the new installed programmes show as being empty in the start-all programmes list.
It seems to me that Windows Explorer has been corrupted.

Is there any way of reinstalling that by itself - or do I need to do a full Windows XP repair or reinstall?
PerrottK (14858)
768499 2009-05-19 01:11:00 It looks like Yahoo photomail can bring up that CoCreateInstance Failed error. If this is uninstalled, uninstall it. It looks like Linksys wireless drivers can also cause that CoCreateInstance Failed error. If these are installed update / reinstall them

That 0X800408154 error may mean one of these (search.microsoft.com)

768500 2009-05-21 04:49:00 Don't have Yahoo photmail or Lynsys drivers. My explorer problem seems to be connected with a corrupted shmedia.dll which apparently can happen when explorer is used to open media files which are damaged. So I have deregistered that and will see how that goes. PerrottK (14858)
