768144 2009-04-24 13:43:00 Hi all,
I will be moving to Te Atatu Peninsula shortly and will be quite close to4 the telephone exchange there, so want to take advantage of the privilege. I don't have any phone number or existing broadband plan with any company and want advice on what ya'll recommend in my situation (which is different to most people who are already with one company to begin with).
Here's what's important to me:
Cap - 10gb should be enough (I think), 5gb probably won't cut it. Anything over 10gb is just a bonus.
Speed - I intend to connect on an ADSL+ plan if possible with the suitable company.
Phoneline/VOIP - I don't really have much knowledge or experience with either of these. I have a mobile and aren't desperate for a homeline when I move but would like to have some kind of phoneline besides my mobile. VOIP seems like an interesting option and I'm happy to do some investment if it's going to be worth the savings in the long run (and functions as well as a normal phone), especially if it means I can take advantage of a naked broadband plan and use a large data cap to cover the call's usage comfortably without reducing my ability to surf the net. I will only need to make minimal local/mobile calls within NZ and (if using VOIP) will make international calls mostly to Australia and South America. If I get a homeline I'll call South America using prepaid phone cards as I currently do, it's the cheapest way.
Support - Only of moderate importance, but better support usually correlates with better service in the first place.
Cost - Consider a maximum monthly bill of UNDER $100. Don't consider $100 a goal, lower monthly costs = better. $80 would be reasonable.

And here's what's not important:
Modem - I'll buy my own.
Other gimmicky features - I don't need Norton, custom homepages, free access to whatever online service owned by the provider. If I wanted them I'd get them separately...

I look forward to hearing your opinions. If I've forgotten some details just ask and I'll answer them, I appreciate the help.

Cheers!

notechyet (4479)
768146 2009-04-24 21:42:00 www.orcon.net.nz - you get to be using their own equipment os makes it slightly cheaper.

768147 2009-04-25 00:32:00 Hi Rahotep,

Welcome to PressF1, and welcome to the area! I currently live <300m from the Peninsula exchange. Whilst Im only on an ADSL-speed plan, Ive spoken with my ISP and they've confirmed the modem is sync'ing at ADSL2 speeds.

Definitely go with Orcon! I'm actually about to shift places on the peninsula (10 days from now) and will be going Naked DSL.

Orcon dont (yet) do VoIP, but you can sign up for a 2talk plan which I'd highly recommend also.

The speeds are brilliant if you're with Orcon, I know a family who's 500m further from the local exchange than I am and their downloads are blazingly fast! With any Telecom-based plan, or with an ISP that wholesales from Telecom, you'll have mixed results to say the least. Speeds crawl horribly from 8PM-ish :(

You mentioned you're buying yourself a modem which is good, invest a good $150 in a decent Linksys modem that'll be reliable enough for VoIP too and you shouldnt have any issues!

Hope this helps

768148 2009-04-25 04:22:00 Son got 12000kbps when he lived in Te Atatu - 1st on SNap, then even faster when he swapped to Orcon. pctek (84)

768150 2009-04-26 04:44:00 Hi again,
Thank you all for your advice. I had already looked at Orcon and was pretty keen so this just confirms that they're my first choice. Regarding modems - presumably I don't have to use ("rent") theirs? As I would rather purchase my own than rent from them. Chilling Silence, assuming I don't have to use their modem, I am happy to invest in a good (Linksys, as you suggested) modem for a reasonable price (consider $150 a max price limit) - is there a specific model you could recommend and a shop that sells it at a good price? My requirements would be that it needs to be wireless (plus at least one wired port would be nice) and can work around the house (it's just an average family home so nothing too extreme necessary - so long as I can connect without issue in the lounge or the bedroom as I wish), as you suggested it needs to be able to be reliable enough for VOIP if I choose to follow that route and obviously it needs to be able to deliver a connection at the speeds Orcon provides. This will be my first time using a non-ISP supplied modem so I'm not familiar with what's out there.

Thanks!

I'm using the modem that Chilling Silence suggested above (after using a couple of others) and finding it excellent. Shop around though - I paid $99.00 for mine. The cost saving makes it even sweeter.
