768088 2009-04-24 11:05:00 Last year I purchased a programme called Family Tree Maker 2008, so far so good.

Now I’ve been sent a database prepared by a programme called Root Magic 4 which I wish to import.

Problem is Family Tree maker 2008 doesn’t recognise the .rmgb files so I can’t import.

I guess what I need to do is convert the .rmgb files to something FTM can read.

How, is the question????????

Anyone else struck this and know of a conversion programme?

I’ve downloaded Root Magic 4, but it won’t let you save the files in any other format.

Equally, Family tree Maker won’t let you save files in a format other than its own.

All sugestions appreciated.:thanks

Nothing in the Knowledge bases..:(

768090 2009-04-24 11:31:00 Will Family Tree Maker import GEDCOM files?

If so then use Rootmagic 4 to open the data you have then export to a GEDCOM file. Then open Family Tree Maker to import the result.

768092 2009-04-24 22:56:00 Thanks Guys,

Yep problem solved .

You just have to export the files (as opposed to save as) in GEDCOM format and then import them from that file .

As an aside, whilst wrestling with this problem I downloaded MyHeritage Family tree maker and it appears to be very good .

Anybody care to comment on the Genealogy programmes available? :thanks

768094 2009-04-24 23:45:00 Hi B.M,
I use Legacy on my PC and PAWriter on my Macbook. That way I can swap GEDCOM files easily between the two.
Previously I used an older 1995 version of FTM but it wouldn't accept GEDCOM files from the newer versions. Luckily I was able to Export everything to Legacy and only lost a few photos.

Genealogy is so much fun and very addictive!
