768027 2009-04-24 05:10:00 Someone wanted help with their eMac as it has been running slow and is apparently riddled with viruses so I said I would ask on here as you guys are really helpful, I downloaded HiJackThis but realised it was for windows only... (i was wondering why it wouldn't open!) Is there anything similar I can use for a mac?

Thanks!

768029 2009-04-24 05:29:00 Seriously, I didn't know Macs can be "riddled by virus" and "slow down" (no sarcasm meant).

Is there such thing as defragmentation?

768030 2009-04-24 05:32:00 What OS is the emac running, How much free hard drive space is there left? plod (107)
768031 2009-04-24 06:10:00 I have never used a mac before so not too sure my way around.
How do i find out how much free space there is?

It doesn't seem to be slow to me, but she said it often freezes and needs to be restarted, that did happen to me when I first turned it on, it said something like
"Panic: Everything is under control" or underway.. or something, but it stayed like that for 40 minutes before I had to turn it off and back on.

768032 2009-04-24 06:13:00 I downloaded iantivirus and when I opened it, it said
"The install package for iantivirus cannot be opened
The bill materials for this package was not found"

....

768033 2009-04-24 06:18:00 try macscan (http://macscan.securemac.com/) for spyware.
To find out free space just click on your HDD folder and it should show you at the bottom.

768034 2009-04-24 06:22:00 Oh and iantivirus is intel mac only. I highly doubt it is a virus. My bet would be either the harddrive is near full or it never has had a clean install done and its full of crud. plod (107)
768035 2009-04-24 06:25:00 there's 35.6GB free out of 76.2

I'll try that macscan now, thank you

768036 2009-04-24 11:06:00 It won't be a virus. I'd recommend backing up the data onto an external drive (you can find Mail, Safari, Address Book files etc in the Library folder) and reformatting the Mac. It will only take an hour or so - if it is running an older version of Mac OS X, it would be a good time to upgrade. However, remember that if it is an eMac it is probably quite old, so don't expect miracles. maccrazy (6741)
