768780 2009-04-26 22:29:00 Hi, I backed up some AVI files onto a DVD some time ago and have been trying to copy them back onto my hard drive so I can edit them with Premiere Elements. I don't have the original DV tape anymore. Most of the files copy ok but one keeps giving me a cyclic redundancy check error. I can play the affected AVI clip in Windows Media Player so does that mean it isn't completely useless and I should be able to recover/rip the file somehow. Any suggestions for software to use to try and fix this would be appreciated as those that I have downloaded don't recognise my 2 DVD drives when I try and rip the file. Thanks for any help. 768781 2009-04-26 22:47:00 You may have some luck with ISOBuster from isobuster.com :)

Give it a whirl and see how you go. Good luck!

768782 2009-04-26 22:48:00 The DVD/CD is probably damaged.

Try unstoppable copier or CD recovery toolbox to try to copy it over:

768783 2009-04-27 01:00:00 Hold the DVD up to the light with the label facing away from you and see if you can see any pinholes of light shining through. If so then your DVD is rotten.

If not, or if so, try a different drive. It's sometimes surprising what one drive can read that another gives up on.

Are there any nice scratches on the shiny side? you could try getting the disc polished (The Gamesman does this)

If you do manage to get a good copy of your file off, then make a new DVD.

768784 2009-04-27 05:27:00 Try reducing the read speed down to it's minimum (maybe 2x or something like that) - it will obviously take longer, but it does tend to be more accuurate.

x2 for Chill's suggestion of ISObuster too!

768785 2009-04-27 06:13:00 Yep I think windows gives up after x tries. I used a program called unstoppable or similar,it actually seemed to copy the harder files last so you atleast get most of them. pkm (13527)
768786 2009-04-27 06:34:00 Another thing to note is that if Windows detects too many read failures from your DVD drive it will turn DMA off, and switch to PIO mode. This will lead to high CPU usage when using the drive and therefore bad system performance.

If you notice this issue after trying to copy this DVD this is probably the cause

768787 2009-04-27 06:39:00 Also try copying the file to HDD on another Computer. I have had times when a file would not copy on this PC but did copy fine on the other PC. Next time it was the other way around on the same files. Not sure what was going on but Eventually I got the files off between the two PC's Bantu (52)
768788 2009-04-27 08:36:00 Hi again, thanks for all the suggestions. Here's what I did.

1. No obvious pinholes or scratches on the DVD
2. I got the same error using a second DVD drive on my PC.
3. I downloaded Isobuster and the CD recovery toolbox software that were suggested and tried the toolbox software first as it was free. The file was 2.8GB and after several hours of "sticking" at about 480 MB, it seems to have succeeded and I have a usable file again which I am about to back up on another DVD.
4. I had also thought to try the DVD on my old PC so since tried that and had no success.
So thanks again for all the help.
