768632 2009-04-26 08:18:00 Hi, I would have thought that this would be very simple but I just cant seem to sort it. I have 2 laptops, bothabout a year old and both running XP. I want to be able to transfer data between them using an ethernet cable. I've run the network setup wizard etc but I just cant get them read each other. I have even read the help which is pretty useless as it says I need to connect through a hub??? Man, it cant be that hard?? Can someone please tell me how to do this IN SIMPLE ENGLISH or point me toward some simple instructions. Ahhhhh!!!! Thanks....... Aporosa (5671)
768633 2009-04-26 08:24:00 All you have to do is plug them togather, and assign IP address to both.

Just Right Click the network adapter on both PCs, Properties>Double Clic TCP/IP protocol, set IP to different ones but same subnet on both PCs, then right click a folder and select>share etc

768634 2009-04-26 08:27:00 DONT use the network wizard its hopeless, put the ips in manually (under the LAN properties)

You need an ethernet hub (search.dse.co.nz) (if you dont have a crossover cable (search.dse.co.nz))

But if neither are on broadband, there's no point in getting a broadband router (just get a normal hub)

768635 2009-04-26 08:36:00 Hi Blam, I have the Ïnternet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window open on both laptops. You said that I need to set the IP Address to "different ones"??? These look like numbers, What just make up any numbers = on one laptop put 123456 and on the other 123457?? Then you said set the "same subnets", what put them both as 777777777? Your assistance is appreciated. Aporosa (5671)
768636 2009-04-26 08:39:00 Mr Speed G.
Thaks for coming on board - I'm a little confused. ARe you saying that I CANNOT simply join the two computers with a Ethernet cable and drag files from one to the other? Also, what ever changes I make to IP portocols, I really do not want to mess with my internet settings.... Your assistance would be appreciated, cheers

768637 2009-04-26 08:41:00 You will need a crossover cable or ethernet switch/hub as mentioned above.

Edit: A Standard Patch/Straight through cable will not work.

Set the TCP/IP Settings for Computer 1 as:

IP Address 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.2

Set the TCP/IP Settings for Computer 2 as:

IP Address 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1

768638 2009-04-26 08:42:00 Have a look at the ends of your cable. Are the wires on the plugs colored the same on each? Or are they out of sequences?

If they are both in the same sequence, then you will need to buy another cable.

768639 2009-04-26 08:46:00 Yip, same colours - ok, I will get a propper cable and follow the instructions as above. Thanks to all for your help........ cheers Aporosa (5671)
