2007-10-02 22:53:00 | Ok I've never traded a car in before. i've always sold it. does anyone know,if you go to a dealer and trade your car in, do you have to bring the change of ownership papers with you? Or can the dealer get this from their computers? | lance4k (4644) | |
2007-10-02 23:32:00 | I'd take them. All car dealers are lying snakes. Anyway you'd get more for it selling it privately then putting the money towards your new one.

2007-10-02 23:52:00 | The only reason to trade in is if you are a little short of a down payment . . . you can use the trade in value to get it to your side of the ledger . Just remember that you are gonna pay for it in the long run . . . not much, but it is a discount on one end and added to the other . If you sell to a private party . . . just make sure you disclose everything and write it all down . . . date, time, take a pix of the buyer if you can . . . get their driver's license number . . . anything else that NZ allows you to know about the buyer . . . and take NO checks! Selling it yourself is fraught with problems . . the listing, the buyers calling at their convenience and then the test drives by people who don't have a vested interest in your vehicle yet . If they crash, you lose . A lot of people have very bad experiences trying to sell their cars themselves . . . and if the car needs a little TLC, then let the dealer provide it . . . a private buyer will beat you down if you show any weakness and then complain to you that they can get it cheaper from their great aunt anyway . Frustration isn't worth it . . . but it depends on what your time is worth . I usually don't buy new at a dealership . . . and I can make a decent amount of repairs to a vehicle that they may be hinkey on selling to a little old lady who will be back every day asking about a strange noise or smell . You can deal . . but be honest with them upfront . . . . they get too many real artists trying to take them for a ride every day . . . and some of those characters are real professionals at making salesmen cry . You . . . may NOT be able to get them to tears . . so tell them you have a trade-in and let the chips fall . . . . Just . . don't let them have your wad of keys . . . including your housekeys, private security box and all other etcetera stuff . . . just give them the one ignition key to test your vehicle . Some dealers will "lose" those keys after the test drive to force you to buy the car and sign what they want just to allow you to be able to get home again . . . . so let them have a cheap copy that you don't mind losing if you cannot leverage them your way . Remember to just get into the car and slowly start it, fumble with the seatbelts and then adjust the mirrors as the salesman comes out to offer a better deal . I love that part of the deal . It'll show you how hungry they are to sell the car you like .

2007-10-03 01:25:00 | trade in sucks ... if a dealer is willing to give you a trade in value of say 10000, you can almost certain to sell it privately for 12000-13000.

2007-10-03 05:04:00 | My parents had an old L300 van, horrible piece of crap, they upgraded to a nice supercharged Estima, and man, that thing goes [through the fuel]. :p Nice van. Anyway, the dealer was going to give them 2k as a trade in on it, sure, it had done over 200k, but was still in good nick, and ran OK. They put it on the side of the road with 4k ono on it, sold it for 4k the next day. Now a local painter owns it, and it has done over 280k (with a little bit of work done on the engine, it was burning oil). But a 100% increase on the price isn't to be laughed at. [most] Car Dealers are the lowest scum.

While helping a friend sell his car, we went to a car dealer and he said that he would give him 1k for the car. Sitting right next to us, was an identical car, except it was a bit rougher, selling for 5k. Just a little bit of a markup...??? |

2007-10-03 08:28:00 | Dealers who have a new vehicle franchise will generally not trade in for their used stock any vehicle over 5 years old, so if you go to such a dealer, the trade in will be moved on at wholesale used price to a bottom end low budget used car dealer - ie you will be offered sod all. If the car is 5 years or younger(and New Zealand new) the formula is simple - buy in price = selling price less $1000 discount to next owner, less 20-25% used car margin, less estimated cost of any repairs etc ( immaculatisation!!), less capital carrying costs for 3 months on the estimated cost of the vehicle. Example Dealer Window price $14995, therefore selling price $13,995 less margin -$2775 = $11,220 less capital carrying cost @14% for 3 months (approx $340)= $10,980 less cost of preparation for sale say $1000 . Therefore best trade in will probably be round $9750 - $10,000 if you are lucky. If the vehicle is tidy and honest you should get round $11,500 and $12,000 on a private sale. However the exception is if the car is a used Jap import - if it is you will be caned - The difference between the dealer landed cost for a Jap import and the dealer window price is about 100%, and why would a dealer give more for a trade in on a used Jap import than he could get a replacement stock item from Japan. So if you have one of those - simple sell it privately, because no matter how hard it may be to sell you should get more than a dealer will offer.

2007-10-04 04:30:00 | Be nice and play together . . . just because you aren't one of them there used car dealers, doesn't mean that they don't deserve a break . . . after all not everyone can be a puter guru like us'ns . They perform a valuable service and here's another thing . . . . . Money spent, money earned . . it's all good . . . at least it is in circulation . I have a very rich friend who buys used cars, used clothing but builds new houses and apartments and condos and huge tracts of land for future earnings . . all to hire people in the trades to level the land, pour the foundations, build the frames, install the walls, lights, gas lines, stairs, ceilings and roofing just to make the money go 'round . It's his way of being philanthropic . He has never had to work for a living . . . never got his hands dirty unless it was to steer his 200 foot yacht . He hires helmsmen, stewards, sailors and enginemen to keep his toys floating and running . He spends so that the lower class can fed and shoe their chillins . He has actually very little in cold cash . . . little in the bank . He spends it all every year . . right down to his last $10,000 . 00 or so . He knows he has a special privilege to do these things . . . and he gives more money away each day . . . more than I ustta earn in a year . Be careful thinking all people with money are thieves, charlatans or ne'er-do-wells . There are some bad guys, but not many . They don't last long .
