The flag proposed there is IMO a nice piece of graphic design - but not a good flag. Flags should be distinctive, easily recognised, relatively simple, but not look like a logo. The line between logo and flag is completely subjective of course, but to me that design is just too trendy/'of it's time'. People will be able to point to it in 20yrs & say it's an early '00s design and be itching to tweak it. Can't find a link this minute, but an example is how the Shell Oil logo has been refined over time. You might think a shell is a pretty timeless emblem but every few decades it's adjusted to the lastest fashion - and that logo on the page has similar properties to me. Best of that website is thsi one (www.nzflag.com) . Not convinced about ferns & koru or greenery though. More tourist board waffle than flag design to me. |
