Telecommunications company Orcon is being tipped to pick up the exclusive deal to provide a mobile network which will support Apple's iPhone when it makes its New Zealand debut.

597638 2007-10-03 19:08:00 Interesting that last week Vodafone said that they weren't interested in brining the iphone into NZ have now said "Paul Brislen of Vodafone said the company was also keeping a watching brief on iPhone."

Good on Orcon for bringing it in. Just hope it's full 3G not 2.5 as on AT&T and is not priced at around $1100

597639 2007-10-04 00:13:00 It will be 3G by the time we get it. Apple signed a deal with a US 3G chip component maker who is obviously able to work within the specs that Apple wants. As for the price you mentioned - that is the price for the phone and contract. The iPhone by itself should only be around $527 *Converted at today's currency exchange rate ($599-$699 NZ most likely) winmacguy (3367)

iProbably won't either since I am not a smart phone user and my current Nokia still works just fine although I would imagine that there will be plenty of takers when the iPhone finally arrives.

i'm guessing that Orcon might end up being the winner if they are the keenest to accept Apple's conditions although they won't necessarily have the best initial network coverage, while Telecom has probably got the best overall network coverage while Vodafone will be somewhere in the middle.

597644 2007-10-04 02:52:00 They're only buying wholesale access to the Vodafones network, I highly doubt they'll ever become a big plan in the mobile phone industry. Every time they offer an awesome deal Vodafone will be able to either undercut them or increase wholesale price when the renegotiate they're contract. Pete O'Neil (6584)

I was surprised to see that they were actually in the running for it, but I guess that they are a phone line provider that becoming a mobile phone service provider is just the next step. It would be interesting to be a "fly on the wall" as Apple execs are not known for being somewhat bolshy and usually getting what they want. Who ever gets the deal will need to be ready to surrender upto 30% of the revenues from the iPhone to Apple (on top of everything else in the deal) for the "privilege of being the sole provider in the country.

As Orcon are now government owned (eg. owned by NZers) it has very deep pockets so could afford to out bid their competition. Vodafones wholesale prices will be governed by the commerce commission and the governemnt. I do think the government have a conflict of interest being back in the telecommunications business, as they can essentially make all the rules.
