596876 2007-10-01 17:26:00 AT&T’s policy on unlocking phones...read it and weep (blogs.zdnet.com)

...and here (blogs.zdnet.com) (be careful if your country of origin does NOT allow this....it IS legal in the US and Europe though)

596877 2007-10-01 21:43:00 The situation changes with every heartbeat: here's the latest in the "big rat gets the cheese" game between Apple and the iPhone hackers .

Last week's firmware update that bricked iPhones that had been unlocked to use services other than AT&T's had the hacking community taking the weekend to come up with some ways to return a bricked unit to fully usable condition .

Still in the whitehat pipeline are "repairs" to unlock an iPhone regardless of which Apple firmware version it's running .

Now guess what?

Nokia looks to capitalize on Apple's troubles with a new campaign for its Nseries phones emphasizing that they are "open to applications, open to widgets, open to anything . . even usable as a phone again . "

Apple ate its own words used against it in a viral video that lauds all those rebels who created third-party apps for the iPhone .

Having a hissy, the Apple-Bonking Turks are all a-tizzy over this news and the hand-wringing is about to get serious .

What does the Treo have to do with anything?

Just trying to divert attention from the utter mess that the iPhone and its users are in.

It's "potential" competition to the iPhone. The two smart phones occupy the same market and the iPhone ain't struggling. I very much doubt that owners of hacked iPhones are in a "mess" since they were well aware of the situation prior to getting the hack.

If the Treo is doing poorly, that makes no difference to what's going on with the iPhone. If you have a failing business, do you go and say "look at this one - it's just gone bankrupt! I guess we're doing fine then"?

Personally I think Apple's sales tactic for the iPhone of locking the phone to a provider they have a deal with is very Microsoft-like, something which one would expect they'd want to avoid.

Anti-competitive, monopolising etc. It's not the same at all, of course, because people don't have to use iPhones, but I don't think it's a good business stategy and it will hurt them in the end.

I guess we will just have to wait and see. So far sales are looking very strong in the run up to Christmas

Sales of Apple's slick touch-screen handset at AT&T retail stores, which saw an immediate spike following a $200 price cut earlier this month, appear to have stabilized at levels much higher than one analyst had anticipated.

In a report released to clients earlier this month, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said iPhone sales increased as much as threefold at most Apple and AT&T stores in the first five days that followed Apple's 33 percent price cut on Sept. 5th.
