769992 2009-05-01 10:09:00 I have a Vista Ultimate 64 PC networked into a Linksys WRT610n router by wired gigabit connection.
Plugged-in via usb to the router is a Maxtor One Touch 4 80GB 2.5" portable SATA drive.
I have mapped it as a network drive.
I am trying to transfer a 4Gb blue ray movie. The file transfer rate starts off at a whopping 7mb/sec and gradually drops and drops. Currently, about 3 minutes into the transfer the rate has dropped to 4.2mb/sec. Sometimes it stops altogether and I'm told there is a problem accessing the source drive. When I go to retry the file transfer rate dips even further into the kb range and only creeps up very slowly.

What can I do to improve this? If I directly connect the same drive to my PC I get around 31mb/sec.
I have turned-off 'remote differential compression'.
I run AVAST antivirus, and Windows defender, do these delay the file transfer somehow?

769993 2009-05-01 10:28:00 I forgot to add. The NAS drive is formatted in FAT32. supersi (8401)
769994 2009-05-01 10:30:00 In my experience, the transfer rates using a router as a NAS device is quite poor - I would get around 2mb/s, and it wouldn't matter if I was using Vista or XP.

Do you have access to a non-Vista PC which you can try the same thing with, to see if it's a problem with Windows, or not?

769995 2009-05-01 10:48:00 I would format the hdd to NTFS (If youre copying this file to it). If the file is just over 4 GB it probably wont copy or work at all. Speedy Gonzales (78)
769996 2009-05-01 10:52:00 Don't know if this affects this but FAT32 formatted drives can only hold a maximum of 4gb per file....

Convert it to NTFS...compression and increased security

769997 2009-05-02 03:26:00 There's a reason GOOD NAS devices sell for around $1000

The cheapo NAS's are slow.
Ive been down this road myself, only to be disappointed. Slow speeds
were confirmed on many online reviews.
Of course Vista can has its own issues which wont help either. SP1 is a must have.

769998 2009-05-02 03:37:00 I would bet that the USB interface is a killer as well. The router has to handle it and these routers just don't have much spare horsepower or buffer space. linw (53)
