769968 2009-05-01 08:01:00 Being of a cynical nature (VBG) - are Norton running some reward system at the moment for computer salesmen? This week I helped a friend purchase a new PC (Noel Leeming) and the sales rep. (who was most helpful) was VERY pushy about buying Norton - which I refused.... I can only assume he was going to get some special reward for having sold a subscription.....

769969 2009-05-01 08:18:00 I guess that's why Norton gets to corrupt so many machines by being sold on by morons who don't know any better and paying said morons a bonus for each sale of Norton gary67 (56)
769970 2009-05-01 08:18:00 Those who are dumb such as the Customers Sales guys at electronic shops recommend the big companies because they think they are best.

Its stupid, but its how life works

Not directly, but most of those salespeople are on commission & anti-virus is an easy extra to sell to most people. Since they don't stock any decent products, they push what they do have.

769972 2009-05-01 08:45:00 Ah, Norton.
Easy to install, but impossible to remove all the garbage that comes with it.

From memory, they had reasonably good software about 20 years ago... maybe when a guy by the name of Norton was doing the coding.

Since then the corporate influence has (kinda predictably) turned all they touch to sh1+.

I was given a crack some time back for extended free use of their product.
Problem now though, is that they'd have to pay ME to use their kit.

It ain't even worth pirating!

To add to that comment which is very true - most of them dont even know what they are selling - almost every time you ask them something about the product, the first thing they do is look at the box and basically read whats on it.

I was looking once at Hardly Normals ( as you do), and got told all about Norton and the sales guy was trying to sell it to me - with a straight face, and politely I said - "why would I want to put on software that slows down your computer, misses many infections and when it corrupts turns your PC to rubbish"

His jaw Dropped - He couldn't answer and simply walked away without saying anything.
My wife was standing there laughing - and all she said was your a bast*** :)

Edited; BUT we did actually buy the new Jug we went in for originally anyway.

769974 2009-05-01 21:43:00 I was at PB Tech a few weeks ago and one of the Sales people was following this bloke around like a little puppy loading him up with almost every Norton product going, I felt really sorry for the guy. The sales dude was always too close for me to say anything to the bloke really. Bantu (52)
769975 2009-05-01 22:59:00 Hi Paul.Cov,

I know from bitter experience what Nortons can do--BUT it is completely removable---if you download Nortons removal tool---and keep it in your downloads folder for future ( inevitable ) use :wub

This program works as none of the computer's O S, or other software can, as Nortons has tenacious abilities aginst removing it- that removal tool will do the job

Use ESET--- the decision to so do I got from F1 users and the likes of Wainui tech, who has proved a very helpful kind of tech :)

Want to bet?
You run it sometime, then go into the registry manually and take a look.......

769977 2009-05-02 22:43:00 Oooh, a Norton removal tool. I might take a look at it. Hope it doesn't have to be 'installed' as well.

The biggest issue I had was some unannounced and unwanted part of Norton taking over the task of the Recycle Bin.
Got rid of Norton as well as I could, but there are still traces of it's influence on my bin, and I suspect some deleted files still being held by this 'protection'.

They totally ruined that disc imaging app as well (forget its name currently).
Really bugs me that software companies get away with selling software that is so spectacularly full of bugs.
