769401 2009-04-29 04:10:00 Well, the faithful beast is around 2 years old now. Got a new graphics card though (Asus GTX260) and a brand new Silverstone 750w PSU.

I'm really out of touch with what's best value for money at the moment.

Current components that I'm looking at changing are:

AMD X2 6000+ (was the gruntiest AMD processor you could buy at the time).

3 x 1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 4-4-4-12

Asus M2N32 Sli deluxe wifi edition.

I like AMD, and I'm eyeing up the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition ($589) but I know I really ought to switch to Intel.

I'm pretty sure I will get booed out of the forum if I decided to go with AMD for a gaming PC anyway... :p

Soo.... :D

$1400 (ish) is the budget I'm aiming for... PC will be used mainly for intensive apps (Think Adobe CS3 masters suite and vegas video) and quite a bit of gaming. Outputting to a 22" 1080p monitor.

Want 4GB of Ram, lowest latency possible. Preferably Corsair. Will more than likely be running Win7 x64. (Or Vista Business x64).

I've got a nice watercooling setup for the CPU, so overclocking should be all good, if the grunty PC gurus recommend that. :D

Have a massive thermaltake case.

+1 internets for the person with the winning configuration. :D

769406 2009-04-29 05:09:00 Is that an AM2+ board?, you could go for the new 45nm X4 955BE...AMD now has a CPU to challenge all of Intels cpus except the i7

769407 2009-04-29 05:31:00 Yeah you may as well go triple channel since the board would handle it
$220 for 6gb of Gskill from Playtech
Plenty of options there and core i7 all they way!!!

769408 2009-04-29 05:33:00 AMD post. :D

Yeah the board I have now is AM2+ compatible...that's the exact CPU I was actually looking at too... :nerd:

That processor would be good cause it's AM3 compatible too, eg will work with DDR3 RAM.

The AMD boards seem a bit lacking in the DDR3 RAM speed department. Might have to wait for native 1333mhz RAM boards...

Ok then...I had momentarily forgotten about Triple Channel.

Looks very very nice. Much nicer than an AMD setup. Doesn't look as if I'd be gaining a lot going up to the P6T Deluxe as I'm not interested in a SLI or Crossfire setup, and I'll be using watercooling so the fancy cooling stuff on the board will be of limited value.

Anyone know what the performance of the i7 920 would be in comparison with the AMD II X4 955?

769410 2009-04-29 06:14:00 Hold on. Why would you buy it retail? Surely you can get the parts through your work? pctek (84)
