599171 2007-10-08 03:14:00 I am thinking about buying a new, configure-to-order, Vaio FZ laptop. I'm spending roughly $2,200 on a T7500@2.2GHz, and all the bells and whistles. It apparently has a screen resolution (according to the site) of 1280x800 with an 8400M GT, which I'm a little upset about. Dell's 15.4" has 1680x1050.

What would be my best choice in this price range with a 15.4" screen and versatile performance?

599172 2007-10-08 03:21:00 No personal experience with them but Sony do make a decent looking laptop, next to a MacBook Pro. ;) winmacguy (3367)
599173 2007-10-08 03:25:00 Dell's laptops are good. Solidly built (albeit quite plasticy), and excellent bang for your buck. I bought a Dell Inspiron 640m (14.1" screen) earlier this year, and am absolutely loving it. The 9-cell battery gives me between 5-7hrs on a full charge (running Vista Ultimate). I would strongly recommend you seriously consider Dell as an option. somebody (208)
599174 2007-10-08 03:32:00 My top choices are:

ASUS and the high end 3yr Toshibas. Not the low-end ones.

Dell doesn't even come into it.

The Sony only has a 1 yr warranty.

599175 2007-10-08 03:42:00 I've heard that trying to get Sony to service your laptop is like pulling teeth, that was about two years ago though. I was planning on paying for a 3yr, on-site service plan.

5-7 hours with a Dell laptop is amazing though. that would definitely be something for me to consider, thanks 'Somebody'.

599176 2007-10-08 03:44:00 I don't know if I could stand such a high resolution on a 15.4" laptop screen. I find 1280x800 about right for my 15.4" laptop screen.
To be honest, I find 1680x1050 almost too much for the 20" desktop monitors we have at uni!!

599177 2007-10-08 03:50:00 I use 1440x900 on my laptop 14.4" screen, and everything is really nice and crisp. Took a little while to get used to the smaller text, but now I'm used to it, "normal" screens seem too pixelated to me. somebody (208)
599178 2007-10-08 03:51:00 my 24" is set at 1920x1200 winmacguy (3367)
599179 2007-10-08 03:52:00 I'm not saying I would run the laptop at 1680x1050. But since the Dell monitor can go up to a higher resolution than the sony screen, the dot pitch is smaller, and I'm thinking it might be a much better screen. V3LOCIP3D3 (12897)
599180 2007-10-08 04:20:00 Sony after sales service is crap, and parts very expencive. Dell is average all over. I'm with pctek. Get an Asus or Toshiba. HP (not Compaq) is good too. wratterus (105)
