599110 2007-10-07 22:30:00 This guy also has a life ;)

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Geoff Robinson does not fit the stereotype of a hardcore geek gamer. The Oregon State University student is sociable, an avid weight lifter, studies English and history -- not computer science -- and wants to be a high school teacher.

599111 2007-10-07 23:41:00 most of the serious gaming teams in NZ consist of normal guys, with normal jobs. The average age of serious gamers is also ever increasing, with the best teams averaging around 25-30.

Gamers are no longer just 14 year old kids, those kids grew up :D

599112 2007-10-07 23:43:00 Thats good to know, Jan ;)
I guess they would need to be of suitable financial means to be able to pay for the constant hardware upgrades. I think the last time I was gaming was pac man on an Apple back in about 1982-83. Lots of fun :) That and Pirates ( I think that was the name of it) on the Apple at school in 1984-85 back when Gold Corp, Omni Corp and Equity Corp were high fliers on the share market - right up till they crashed on Black Monday October 19th 1987. (Black Tuesday in the US)

599114 2007-10-08 00:28:00 this is true, and probably why most of the corporations now appeal to the 'older' crowd with their new, expensive hardware. One way to get around it is to get good enough to be sponsored :) There are some good teams out there in NZ now, that are making a wee impact on the world stage.

of course, my bad. There are several serious girl, or grrrl, gamers in NZ as well :)

i don't know where the gamer stereotype came from - because once a month in Invercargill me and my mates attend a smallish "Lan Party" consisting of 10-20 men and women from 16-30 and we are all "average" people - we drink booze and yell at each other and mock each other when we run them over playing a Quick game of Battlefield Vietnam amongst the variety of other games we play

it really is good fun and the only nerdy or geeky part about it would be talking about cars at 4.30 am when the gaming has stopped :p

not exactly a rare species these "Gamers with a life"

NOT spam, just general chat about the differing demographic of gamers over the last 20 years. Although I don't game at home I do pop a couple of $$ into the Sega Rally and Crisis shooting games when waiting to see a movie. used to spend waay to much money on a cool fighter pilot flying one when i was in the UK going to the movies in Ealing west London back in 1995-97. Plus had a cool one in the hotel/hostel I lived in in Central London/Queensway fps killing aliens. Spent way too much money on that too. I think it was called Area 51.
