A court in the US has ordered a woman to pay $222,000 (£109,000) in damages for illegally file-sharing music.

Seems a bit on the harsh side to me.:dogeye:

Very harsh. Guess the music industry got ticked off she did not want to settle out of court so they slammed her hard. Cannot see how she can ever pay that amount.

About 26,000 lawsuits have been filed against alleged file-sharers, but most defendants settle privately by paying damages amounting to a few thousand dollars.

598268 2007-10-05 18:25:00 Id say the music industry would have some pretty brutal lawyers, they could sell ice to an eskimo. Oh well the chick got caught and tried to fight it.....silly move rob_on_guitar (4196)
598269 2007-10-05 18:39:00 Typically short sighted of the music industry. winmacguy (3367)
598270 2007-10-05 19:02:00 That fine is in US dollars, is for just 24 songs, and does not include legal costs. Erayd (23)
598271 2007-10-05 20:22:00 IMHO - it's totally out of proportion with the 'losses' (if any) suffered by the music company.
No wonder they are into taking legal action against any opportunity. It's a source of revenue.

598272 2007-10-05 20:51:00 Its a great concept, sue your customers into financial ruin in the hope that they will go back to buying your over priced CDs.:D winmacguy (3367)
598273 2007-10-05 21:00:00 Seriously why would you try and fight it known your going to get yer ass kicked by some lawyer with an over the top salary? Personally I would have taken the out of court way.... rob_on_guitar (4196)

The Record Companies still don't get that their old way of doing things has come to an end. Even a lot of the bands don't want them anymore and the future is in free music distribution with bands making money from concerts and merchandise.

As the NOFX song says - Dinosaurs Will Die

598275 2007-10-06 06:06:00 Must have had a very good lawyer to convince the jury. I wonder what the age group make up of the jury was and what their understanding of technology digital music and rip off prices for CDs verses fairer prices for digital downloads was...probably about 0.

The RIAA is definitely stuck in the dark ages.
