| 597894 | 2007-10-04 19:03:00 | Firstly: If I do any more posts on the theme of saving money I'll prefix them with "Frugal" (as this one is), so I won't be wasting the time of those who aren't interested in the subject. Wondering if any of you consciously use portion control - whether to to save money or for "green" reasons. For instance, I figured out long ago that a "squirt" of dishwashing liquid is a very imprecise amount, so instead I buy refill packs (on special!) and put them in a pump dispenser that allocates the exact amount for a sink full o' dishes. Also, it's very hard to pour a small amount of dettol into a little bowl of hot water to bathe a cut (it goes "glop glop" from the bottle), so I use a dropper bottle. Do you do anything along the same lines? If so, please share. |

And food: I made 3 chicken and mushroom pies out of 1/2 pkt mushrooms and 3 chicken drumsticks last week. 1 meal size and 4 individual size ones. Thats 3 dinners and a lunch for us. |

When opening a packet of goodies such as biscuits, I'll put a third or half of the packet in one container to go in the pantry and the rest in another container to hide from the tribe . That way the greedy ones won't scoff half the packet in one sitting and leave hardly anything for the rest of us . I also stock up on "specials" at the supermarket (perhaps this should be in your other thread) and hide all but one of the popular items otherwise they would disappear in less than a week . One thing I would really like to control is the amount of toilet paper used . I still don't know who the culprit is but someone likes to use half a roll everytime they go in there . :groan: |

They said we should use MAXIMUM acceleration to get to the most economical speed quickly. We all thought they were nutty until a test was done on TV - it may have been the AA who conducted it. To our amazement they were right! I still don't know what to do! Tom |

Tom I think "brisk" acceleration would have something to be said for it - I remember Consumer magazine saying something of the sort long ago. Hard to believe that 'maximum' acceleration, if you mean foot to the floor, can be economical. As it happens, I'm in a position to test this myself. I filled the car from empty yesterday (60L), set the trip meter to zero, and have been driving as carefully as good manners will permit (i.e. not holding up people behind me) to see what my economy's like after some recent engine work. When I've done this tank, I'll do a tank with "brisk" acceleration (but no change to cruising behaviour), and we'll see what's what. |
