598017 2007-10-09 09:31:00 Thats not hypocritical beeswax, in 1995 there was Windows or .... nothing as far as suitable operating systems went. (Apple didn't really count back then)

When the iPod was first released in 2003 there were a few other forms of music devices on the market and plenty of other companies who had the capacity to create some competition for Apple. Plenty of them have certainly tried in the last 4-5 years.

Right now only Sony and Microsoft have the capability (Sony) and the cash (MS) to compete against Apple for the iPod market and it isn't looking overly favourable for either.

I hope creative wins at the end.Doubt it though

 They're nearly out of business now. They have been reduced to making 3rd party add ons for the iPod.

Whoa, hold on tiger: "in 1995 there was Windows or .... nothing as far as suitable operating systems went. (Apple didn't really count back then)"

Say what??? Talk about revising history. Apple enjoyed its glory days from 1985 to the mid 90s in terms of its OS being better than the competition. And you say it didn't really count back then!! At no time prior to the mi 90s did any other company, including MS and IBM, have an OS that could match Mac OS for sophistication.

Despite which, MS, with its bung old DOS/Win 3.1/NT/95 series of OSes stole the bulk of the OS market, restricting Apple to an increasingly niche market and trouncing IBM's sophisticated OS/2.

How on earth can you attempt to re-write history to imply Apple was around to compete with Windows, just to suit your agenda?

The failure of Mac OS, or OS/2 to gobble up the market like MS did (and yes, Apple was never going to be as dominant because it was hardware as well), is testament to the fact that sales do not correlate to quality and you cannot use sale figures to imply that a product range is the best in the market.

I repeat: iPods are good products, but not so good as to justify the major dominance Apple has in the market. That dominance is the result of other factors.

You’re a stuck record. And it’s the White Album ….

I'm stunned by your waffle, Not by any sales figures. I couldn't care less about how many any of them sell.

Sure am glad I'm not you though, Have you ever thought about getting a hobby?, Or professional help?, medication? a bit of sun?

598023 2007-10-09 10:06:00 I still don't want an iPod, winmacguy.

I never read The Da Vinci Code.

Not interested in Harry Potter - whether he's gay, bi or dead.

I don't use Body Shop products - even the condoms which haven't been tested on animals.

More people buy Windows for the x86 instruction set architecture than buy Mac OS. Windows works on lots of different hardware because their programmers have a far wider brief than Apple's - who only have to get the OS to work on a tiny range of very expensive hardware.

It just works.

Your toaster doesn’t crash. Your kitchen sink doesn’t crash. Why should your computer? Think of the countless hours you would save if your PC worked on your time — not the other way around. Then think about a Mac.

BTW, all those great reviews you keep banging about:

Editor-in-Chief Harry McCracken quit abruptly today because the company’s new CEO, Colin Crawford, tried to kill a story about Apple and Steve Jobs.

The piece, a whimsical article titled “Ten Things We Hate About Apple,” was still in draft form when Crawford killed it. McCracken said no way and walked after Crawford refused to compromise. Apparently Crawford also told editors that product reviews in the magazine were too critical of vendors, especially ones who advertise in the magazine, and that they had to start being nicer to advertisers.

Nicer to advertisers? Hmm, consistent 4 and 5 star ratings seem pretty nice to me. To be fair, advertiser pressure is widespread and really reaches far beyond MacWorld and Apple being in cahoots together, it’s rampant in all news and publication media. Freedom of press is second in line to the advertisers dollar. Our advice? If you want legitimate honest reviews and opinions on products, Google is your best friend. Publications like MacWorld and PC World preach to their respected choirs, this is not to say they are bad magazines, MacWorld is actually filled with useful tips and tutorials for the Mac, just look elsewhere for a critical analysis on most of Apple’s product offerings. And apparently PC World as well... So now we know why Apple doesn't pay any dividends. They need all the money to pay magazines off:thumbs: Nice!

Atleast they know what Mac owners are like. Sure they;re not talking about you?

PS for Mac Zealots: We know you love Apple more than life itself. Remember, much of the above is also OPINION so try to avoid threatening violence or death on our writers, pets, families, lawns, tulip gardens, whatever.

You fail to mention that McCracken was promptly reinstated and Colin Crawford kicked sideways (he is longer overseeing any editorial) in a victory for editorial independence over advertiser pressure. The article was run, both by US PCW and PC World's around the globe, including NZ PC World on the website.
