And the Zen Vision M is a great product. I got it (as my leaving pressie from work) because I felt it was best of breed in the kind of product I wanted.

The fact of the matter is that Apple's market dominance with iPods is not a reflection of their actual superiority to the competition.

Wasn't referring to you.

And I see I've turned this into a debate...yay me.

Doesn't surprise me.:p

Bruce I would say that Apple's continuing strong sales numbers of 10million + units per quarter in a market where people are FREE to choose which ever portable media player they wish to purchase since 2003 would be inclined to prove you wrong. Next closest is the Zune at just over 1.2 million in total sales of hard drive based players since it was released in November 2006. Bearing in mind that portable music players of various forms did exist prior to the arrival of the iPod although they were pretty clunky.

598009 2007-10-09 04:06:00 I know you don't agree with me. Which is, of course hardly surprising, given that you are a fanatic.

But by you logic, Microsoft Windows is the best operating in existence and anyone who says differently is flogging dead horse. Like those guys at Apple for example.

I would agree with you that the sound? on your music player is possibly better than on an iPod. It is not uncommon for some of the portable music players in the market to have more features than the iPod or FM or what ever that might work better, however when taken as a whole package of software design and UI, price, storage, weight, hardware design/shape, customer appeal and continued product refreshes Apple has proven it has the ability to put all of that into a well designed box and present it to the customers.

Most other manufactures don't put the same effort in to the whole package.

Back in 1995 or there abouts - Microsoft pretty much had the market to itself as Apple (minus Steve) was floundering and Bill was very good at doing deals (legal and otherwise) to make sure that they capitalised on the market.

From 2001 - slightly different story
Jump ahead to Feb 2007 and Vista is released(minus the WOW) after a 5 year wait.
Septmber Vista market share is crawling up the scale to around 7.38% and XP sitting on 79%(gradually declining) with Mac market share rising to around 6.5% with Leopard due out by the end of October.

Records are the best way to reproduce music. It's why the best CD players are engineered to sound like the best turntables - but not other way around.

Not true. The best way to hear reproduced sound is ti hear the band live. But I know what your saying. That no longer applies for modern music, CD would have the best the sound reproduction for anything recorded in the last 10-15 years

Wait, so you can keep banging on about how good the iPod is just through the sales figures even though there are alternatives but we can;'t say the same about Windows?

God, you really are a fanatic with hypocritical double standards .

Thats not hypocritical beeswax, in 1995 there was Windows or .... nothing as far as suitable operating systems went. (Apple didn't really count back then)

When the iPod was first released in 2003 there were a few other forms of music devices on the market and plenty of other companies who had the capacity to create some competition for Apple. Plenty of them have certainly tried in the last 4-5 years.

Right now only Sony and Microsoft have the capability (Sony) and the cash (MS) to compete against Apple for the iPod market and it isn't looking overly favourable for either.

Here is some PR BS for you Metla

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Chief Executive Steve Ballmer Thursday said the company aims to grow its Zune digital music service and devices, hoping to take market share from Apple Inc's (AAPL) iPod.

"We're going to push our music service and move forward with the devices," Ballmer said at an event in Zurich.
