598888 2007-10-07 08:51:00 You can't blame the players too much. The media put so much pressure on them. You should look at it like the poms do, they're expected to get knocked out & when they don't, everyone says " holy **** how the hell did they do that". The same pressure is put on the English football team & look at the results they get when the pressure's on & it counts. Phil B (648)
598889 2007-10-07 09:25:00 Its just a bloody game, don't treat it like a religion - the French rose to the occasion, the All Blacks in spite of having a safe comfortable half time lead were not the team to stop them. Get over it and get on with your lives, it's not the end of the world. KenESmith (6287)

They do get paid a lot of money (eg. they are professionals and are expected to handle such pressures. They do also have special training for the media and how to handle external pressures. They have all sorts of people looking after them, which the 87 team didn't have.

Go back to crying about the Aussie failure that you call a team.

Just a reminder....it aint 87, teams are better, rules have changed, PC is in rugby, if the 87 team played today, they would all be sin binned out ran around anyway, the game is faster and lets face it, those guys were quick back then, but not as fast as today.

598893 2007-10-07 22:36:00 World's ultimate plonkers? Hardly......

I'm not sure I agree Rob. Man is not running that much faster today then he was 25 years ago, JK and Michael Jones and a few others of the day were pretty awesome players........but we digress........

Forward passes and lack of penalties in the 2nd half aside, we were out-thought and out-passioned. The French defence (albeit consistently 1 or 2 metres off-side but who isn't?) was more than up to the task.

No disrespect intended but our players don't have the same mental capacity as players from some countries when it comes to finals football, given the root of rugby in NZ versus say England and Australia. Before I get slayed let me put that in context. Firstly rugby is a combination of strength, skill and mental abilities. We more than make up for the strength and skills (and flair and entertainment) but we aren't as tough mentally. Secondly finals footie is not the same as other tests.

We (the NZ public) expect an entertaining spectacle with long range trys, big hits and so forth and maybe that has filtered through to the way the AB's play. That sort of rugby is fine for an ordinary test but not when it comes to the finals. For example, we frown upon those who use the droppie to win a match. We think of it as a 'Claytons' victory.

But the goal is to have more points at the end of 80 minutes and when it comes to finals football it doesn't matter how you get the points. Why oh why when we were 2 points behind and in possession inside the French 22 did we not go for a drop goal????? That is what I am talking about when I refer to mental capacity - in the same position the Aussies or English (or even the French or Argies) would have done exactly that, but we obviously never thought it was the better option. Look at the number of minnow teams who used drop goals just to get 3 points on the board - how is they have worked this out and we haven't? We could have had that game despite the best efforts of the French (and the officials).

Oh well, it's only a game. C'est la vie! :D Maybe next time. And no-one needs resign because this happens in finals.

Andrew

P.S. I wouldn't take too much crapola from the pomgolian wind-up (from the other thread). When was the last time the English won the World Cup in their national game? 1966 comes to mind.....

P.P.S. And why beat ourselves up over a loss? We are consistently ranked number 1 in the world. Who needs a cup to prove you are the best? The best at a tournament or the best overall? Also consider the Brazilians are by far and away the best soccer team in the World but they have only won 5 out of 18 soccer world cups. I think I read somewhere Brazil has something like 1000 professional players in European competitions, but don't quote me on that. Can't win every one.

And chokers? Hardly. Lets stop using that term because it is rubbish. We were poisoned out of one World Cup and we can't be expected to win every knock out game.

598894 2007-10-07 22:52:00 The real ultimate plonkers are the psychologists and other fluffy thinkers coming out of the woodwork to quell every bodies supposed depression, to suggest we focus on the positives, forgive the All Blacks, What a freakin load of rubbish, This dribble should never have been given airtime.

I even heard an interview on the radio about how it would affect the housing market...***, DIE SCUM, You have **** for brains.

Oh yeah, The All Blacks are LOOOOOSERS
