770268 2009-05-02 06:20:00 I really appreciate all of your help. I can not get it to work. The laptop connects to the same cable modem. When I check the laptop IP/DNS and all the good stuff it stays the same. The settings as you said of course do not work on the PC. The laptop is on automatically detect settings (what ever it say). I do not understand why the PC will not detect them automatically as well. I really tried to understand how to figure out what the IP is but NOPE. If you guys have anymore suggestion. I really do not want to pay for it to go to a shop and they charge me for something I really do not need, and to boot they charge for my youngest child (j/k...they cost too much).:waughh: puffins808 (14043)

I don't know about the cable networks in the US, but here in New Zealand, the if you are connecting via a cable modem you MUST specify the IP address given to you by your ISP. DHCP will not work.

So for example, if I connect my PC directly to my (Motorola SB5101) cable modem, I have to manually set the IP address, gateway, and DNS servers - DHCP won't work. Note that this IP address is the external facing IP address given to me my by ISP - which in my case is 121.73.x.x with a gateway of 121.73.x.1

If you have the same make/model of cable modem as I do, can you try going to http://192.168.100.1/ once you've done what I suggested above, and tell us what you see.

That was pretty neat that site. That is real time. It showed me the laptop and also the PC. It showed the ip address on there but how do I find the DNS?

770270 2009-05-02 06:40:00 That URL I gave you is the modem configuration page for your modem itself - it is mainly used by your ISP's technicians when they come to set things up.

It appears that the Cable modems where you are configured differently then. If your laptop works fine with "automatically detect settings", then there's no real reason why your PC shouldn't also work.

Can you run "ipconfig /all" on your laptop, and post the results here?
