Not at all. I like many Apple products. But you're the one who decided to edit my "quote" to insert my Zen into my blender - who's the hater? And the Zen Vision M is a great product. I got it (as my leaving pressie from work) because I felt it was best of breed in the kind of product I wanted.

The fact of the matter is that Apple's market dominance with iPods is not a reflection of their actual superiority to the competition.

597993 2007-10-08 19:51:00 Not that you're a slave to fashion or anything.

Its not just fashion/marketing that sells the iPod, those 2 combined help to sell the iPod. Considering that the iPod wasn't the first or the only portable music player on the market when it first debuted. If those were the only two things it had going for it, it would have been surpassed as soon as the various competitors released their Dell DJ Dittys, Scan Disks, Walk Mans, Muvo's, Zens, Zunes and any other player that you can name. All the ones I have listed have pretty much fallen by the wayside and the Zune is still struggling to gain traction with v2 expected on the US Market in time for Christmas.

What differentiates the iPod range from the rest and is the most over looked feature by competitors is how the software works with the the hardware and is easy for the user to operate as anyone who has used an iPod can tell you.

Dude use these words in a sentence: "Horse, Flogging, Dead"

Seriously, you think I haven't used an iPod? I'm sorry man, in my previous life as Mr Administrator I respected your right to your opinion, but now that I'm just an average Joe I can say quite simply that an opinion, that never changes no matter what evidence is placed before it, is not an opinion at all. It is fanaticism.

And I never have and never will respect fanaticism.

Have I trashed iPods? No I have not. For the most part they are good products. I just don't think they are automatically the best products. And frequently they are not. This is not just my opinion. This has been seen in product reviews and comparisons, including from PC World's own Mr Bartley (who has nothing against Apple since he owns some of their fine products).

But OK, they sell in droves. That's the power of a brand for you, and Apple has created in the iPod one of the most powerful brands of modern times, a brand that equals or even surpasses what Henry Ford achieved during the early years of the 20th century.

But don't try and tell me it is mainly because they have a secret combination of herbs and spices that the competition cannot understand or match, because its not true. Yes, the software/hardware bundle is easy to use, but it comes with its own costs in terms of the software you are tied into. I, like many others, want more flexibility, combined with a good hardware platform, and I've found that in the Zen.

iPods sells as well as they do because of the power of

1] Apple's brand
2] iPod as a brand
3] Apple's excellent marketing for iPod
4] the quality of the products themselves

and it is in that order.

That would be a very successful dead flogged horse Bruce.

597996 2007-10-08 20:13:00 I don't have an iPod because they don't play records.

And everybody knows that records sound better than anything else.

So there.

Long live Rega and Linn.
