769746 2009-04-30 10:05:00 Try going into device manager>right click vide adapter>uninstall>reboot.

Should reinstall video driver on reboot, if it doesn't work boot into safe mode which will use the default VGA.sys driver then install the latest version from the manufacturers website

This is getting to be too technical for me,
and I am not connected to the internet to
get drivers if anything goes wrong.
So thanks for your help,
but I had better not try it.

I thank you for the advice you have given me.

769747 2009-04-30 10:23:00 The refresh rate is set at optimal
in settings,
and when the computer starts
a message comes on the screen
saying it is 60Khz.Change the refresh rate from "optimal" to 72 or 80.

Hi,
If I try changing that setting to 70, say, a warning comes up saying that some monitors may be damaged by an improper setting.
Therefore I don't want to continue, because I have a new monitor and I don't want to risk it.
I am reasonably happy now, because if the hardware is OK, I think my old computer will probably work OK with my old CRT monitor, which is what I want, but can't try it just at the moment.
Thanks for your help.

769749 2009-04-30 22:27:00 What is the Video Cards Model No.? Blam (54)
769750 2009-05-01 02:09:00 still sounds like refresh rate - if it's a CRT 60hz is too low, 75 would be better and many handle as high as 85.

60 is the default value for every LCD I have seen though.

769751 2009-05-01 06:30:00 When you turned the PC on without the monitor connected, windows probably changed the refresh rate or resolution from what you usually use.

If the refresh rate is too low (like 50hz interlaced or something weird) or too high you can get strange problems

Same goes for if your resolution is too high.

Put it at 800x600 @ 60hz every monitor should be able to handle that (Unless it's ancient eg: 1991 or earlier) You may need to restart for the settings to take effect.

769752 2009-05-01 07:37:00 I have now evaded the problem.

I have set up my ME computer with my old Philips 107S CRT monitor, (which has been an excellent monitor), and it works perfectly,

My new monitor is a new HP v220 LCD monitor, (which this thread reffered to)and I am pleased with that too. It doesn't have a problem with my laptop.

I now realize my original problem occured after I removed a 2 computer KVM
switch that I had been using with the computer. So perhaps that was when the problem occured and not when at the same time, I started the computer without the monitor plugged in.

Thank you
