| 599420 | 2007-10-08 23:56:00 | Hi Gum Digger What exactly are people going to be using this system for You say it is going to be targeted at people who have never used a PC before So i am assuming it is going to be basic email and word processing I would say that in addition to an FAQ or even in place of it, stick shortcuts on the PC desktop and rename them to their function eg Konqurer/firefox becomes internet Open office becomes Write letter etc I am a little curious as to why in this day and age you would be using redhat 9, it was brilliant in its day but things have moved on a lot in usability terms since then, i am guessing perhaps old hardware or familiarity on your behalf FAQ Question What does the Home icon mean (on their desktop) Where are my files saved Why can't my friend read the files i send them (save as msoffice format) The coffee cup holder keep sliding back in Why can't i just turn the machine off at the wall How do i make the text bigger so that i can see it clearly (essential if you are working with the elderly) |

It is the same as teaching your students to use Windows 95 today. I would be putting in an formal complaint to their superior unless they have a good reason to do so. Anyhow moving on ... Are you doing this with Gnome or KDE? By default RH (and Fedora) use Gnome so keep this in mind when writing your FAQs. Nigel has given some good suggestions. If you are looking at basic use, then consider things like how do I send an email, how to I browse the internet, how do I find my saved documents, how do I change the appearance, colours and wallpaper; basically anything a new computer user will ask but answer it using the Linux program equivalents. Don't forget to include how do I update my computer with security fixes. |

| 599422 | 2007-10-09 04:09:00 | HUH? I think I hit the nail on the head . . . did you even read the question? Let me refresh you . . . . . . Makes sense to me what I sent . . . just where do YOU think I missed the boat? My idea of a glossary was right on . . . it's confusing at best, dumbfounding at least . Humbly awaiting your insight . The assignment asks for a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) . You suggested a glossary, and then started rambling about your own experience . Yes your ramblings are valid, just not in this thread :) |

Yes your ramblings are valid, just not in this thread :) Disagree again..The original poster posed the statement that these were gonna be n00bs in L-based system (the antiquity of it was not a concern of mine...I didn't know it was so old anyway), but I have had a lot of trouble with terms and names of things, and I backed up my idea with personal appraisals of what I find confusing. Therefore: A glossary is primary in my mind. Sorry to offend you and any others with my rambling. And, as this is the Chat side of F1, it is a little looser in standards and rule anyway. |

Actually it is for people who have never used a PC which is a lot different from a previous Windows user as they have not formed any habbits about them. Jen has it right and I aggree with her about trying to teach anyone about an old OS. There is no point. |

| 599427 | 2007-10-09 14:54:00 | I really like the idea of renaming the icons . . . maybe the little pop-outs when you hover on them could be corrected to give a little readout on what they do too . . This would prolly work with any distro, old or new . . but that's not what I find bad in any case . Learnin' is learnin' and if it's even an antique distro, it's all good anyway . But then again, that would not accomplish much on the learning curve in acquiring the new language . Just as an aside, I wonder how many people started with an L-based distro and not NT stuff . It's like a child's home language . . . if the one you learn is Swahili, then anything else is foreign . . . just like a distro/OPSYS . . anything else is just "different" . I believe that an NT OPSYS is a lot friendlier to go to from an L-based distro though . To n00bs, it shouldn't matter much in either case . |

| 599428 | 2007-10-18 07:21:00 | Hi, I have to also build a knowledgebase in microsoft access. But this is for linux if its red hat problem then bonus. but it has to be like real basic one. e.g. when your trying to delete a word file which is open. windows gives u an error saying file in use etc. i was wondering where i could find something like this. or i would even appreciate if you contribute some of your basic linux errors you have come accross. thanks |
