Thanks, but I'm in Extreme Economy mode at the moment due to under-employment, so I won't be buyin' no new car stereo.

Plus I'm an olde farte, so I can't get with the groove all you young fellers are into. I prefer wax cylinders to these new-fangled records and tapes, but I can't get a car player (guess on a hot day all your cylinders would melt).

598251 2007-10-06 01:29:00 Good news: I got the tape out and it wasn't entangled in the mechanism or broken.

Bad news: that means the drive itself is probably kaput, since it wouldn't eject or play it.

Good news: At least I don't have to listen to 20-30 seconds of "click ... click ... click ..." every time I want to listen to the radio.

More good news: Tape cassette is perfectly all right except for the few scratches I inflicted on it getting it out.

Thanks for the advice.

For the record ... even skinny pliers were too thick, as the slot the tape goes in is barely bigger than the edge-on tape itself. However I happen to have two large pairs of tweezers.

The tape fits in a sort of frame inside the unit, then the frame drops with the cassette onto the pins and driver spools. It was half-way dropped. A little door closes over the slot.

One pair of tweezers held the door open and the tape up level with the slot while I tried to pull it out with the other pair, but too slippery: metal on smooth plastic, so I made two little loops of sellotape - sticky side out - and jammed them over the tines of the tweezers to give them grip.

Even then it was a lot of jiggling and swearing to get the tape fully clear of the pins at the deeper part. The sellotape came off the tweezers just as I had freed it, but then it was just slightly out the door and I could grab it with the pliers.
