When opening a packet of goodies such as biscuits, I'll put a third or half of the packet in one container to go in the pantry and the rest in another container to hide from the tribe . That way the greedy ones won't scoff half the packet in one sitting and leave hardly anything for the rest of us . I also stock up on "specials" at the supermarket (perhaps this should be in your other thread) and hide all but one of the popular items otherwise they would disappear in less than a week . One thing I would really like to control is the amount of toilet paper used . I still don't know who the culprit is but someone likes to use half a roll everytime they go in there . :groan: You can put your money on a sheila using all of bog roll . I don't practice the above(portion control)any savings at a cost of time . |

Hard to believe that 'maximum' acceleration, if you mean foot to the floor, can be economical . No - maximum acceleration was what I remember . Obviously if you could reach say 50kph in a split second and be in top gear then drive at that pace you would have superb economy . Its the dawdling in the lower gears with the engine running inefficiently that is the problem with the gentle acceleration . It did come as it bit of a shock to those of us who had practiced gentle acceleration for years to save money . I have to admit that I still use gentle acceleration as both myself and the car are past our best years - and I don't do enough mileage to justify worrying about the petrol . Tom |

Tom I'll keep an open mind. I wonder if Joe the mechanical whiz has any view on this. And we'll see what my test brings out. Imagine if it's true - we might one day see government billboards along the lines of ... "Put your foot down, you bloody idiot - You're wasting gas!" Also, one thing I wonder is this: We know that using the air con is a gas guzzler, but Auckland in the summer is pretty miserable to do without it (specially since if you open your windows these days you get a snoot full of diesel soot), but I wonder if the higher settings use more power/gas than the lower ones, or if it's a binary situation: If it's on it uses a certain amount of power to run the compressor regardless of whether it's on fan level 1 or 4. |
