2007-10-05 09:06:00 | PayPal is fine. I use it regularly and have never had any problems. | maccrazy (6741) | |
2007-10-05 12:18:00 | I have used paypal on ebay (which now owns paypal), for 3 years which has allowed me to buy watches, cell phone batteries, chargers, etc for about 30 % to 50% of the price here in NZ. Many major mechant sites and stock photography sites require paypal for you to get paid for any sales. More people tend to worry about direct cedit card online payments, I think, than paypal. In fact using paypal so effortlessly on ebay caused me to max out my Visa card once, as a result for buying for family members who did not have paypal. | kahawai chaser (3545) | |
2007-10-05 21:36:00 | I read on paypalsucks.com though that if you do get scammed, your bank is more likely to get your money back for you, whereas paypal apparently has no protection for things like this Looks like I'm going to have to read someone's T&C for once.

2007-10-06 13:19:00 | When buying items online, often you have the option to insure, and if the seller uses a paypal account (for selling) they are often reputable. Particularly for the ebay auctions (where paypal is probably used the most) since ebay are likely to ensure that their sellers are of high standard due to ebay's ownership of paypal. Another good thing with paypal perhaps, is that you can make the transaction anytime online, unlike with visa direct, you often have to ring the country during their working hours. I have done this many times - at 2 am to 7 am (since USA is about 16 - 18 hrs behind), dialing a string of numbers, then waiting and hoping a person answers, rather than a recorder - then relaying another string of ur card's numbers. Then u might have to confirm with a email...with ur postal code, etc.. I would email/contact paypal with ur queries, cos they may have different membership levels for buyers..

2007-10-06 19:48:00 | Ok, so I've signed up, and I add my card and they charge me $1 just for that . Nowhere on the add card page did it say they would do that! Has this happened to any of you? I emailed them, and received this: Hello, my name is ******* and I am happy to assist you with your question in regards to the $1 authorization on your credit card . Sorry for the confusion . A basic authorization is an agreement between a buyer and a merchant for a purchase of a specified amount . With a basic authorization, your payment is not complete until the merchant processes the payment . These drop off after 5 business days . The minimum authorization is $1 . 00, and the maximum authorization is the same as PayPal's transaction limit of $10,000 . These limits also apply to reauthorizations . I appreciate the opportunity to assist you . We are committed to making your experiences at PayPal pleasant and rewarding . How does this relate to me just adding my card?

2007-10-07 20:29:00 | How does this relate to me just adding my card? It doesn't. That looks like an automated response. My guess is that AI read your query as a purchase debit on your card. Cheers Billy 8-{)

2007-10-07 20:35:00 | so I replied again, and this time got: The authorization that you are seeing is not a fee . It's is a $1 authorization to test the card . It is temporary and will expire from the credit card account . An authorization is a common method banks use when validating credit or debit cards . Please check with your card issuer for more information regarding this type of test authorization . The authorization will remain on your card for a short time and will show a "hold" or "pending" status . It may take a few minutes or up to 30 days, depending on your bank, for the transaction to be removed from your account . You may see an authorization even if the card was not approved . Fair enough, I'll wait and see what happens . . . .
