2009-05-02 01:22:00 | Hi Guys I have a self-built Windows PC that has gone well for 2 years. Two months ago the power supply crapped out and I fitted a new one and its all OK. Till today ! when I was using it and all of a sudden it died. I took the cover off and everytime I pressed the on button the power supply started and the CPU fan started for about 2 seconds then it went dead. Could this be some form of over heating ? and if so what ? I went out and bought a new power supply, but when I got home and turned it on it went all OK ! But obviously something is not quite right.

What went dead after 2 seconds? The whole computer of just the fan? Is the fan seated properly? Turn the computer on and leave it for 2hours on. Keep an eye on the temps with Speedfan or Realtemp |

2009-05-02 03:02:00 | It's really hard to say what might be wrong. But I would start by making sure it was de-dusted (new word!), especially all fans, heatsinks and air intakes. The cpu heatsink fins get really clogged up after a while. Then I would reseat everything, cross everything, pray a little and start 'er up and after a couple of days, slowly uncross all the things I had crossed:D Good luck.

2009-05-02 03:24:00 | Thanks for that guys. In the meantime I went out and bought another power supply. And fitted it. The computer has turn itself off twice even with this. So I will try de-dusting as you say. I'll go and buy some compressed air. But over my years of selling pc's I have seen many far more dustier than mine. I've unplugged my second hard drive just to reduce the load in the meantime. Its been on now for half an hour.

2009-05-02 07:53:00 | Thanks PCtek, My original PSU's were an Enermax and a Thermaltake (hardly rubbish). But just now I bought 2 el cheapo ones (all they had) from my local PC store - just to get my pc going. I am going to blow out my pc and the cpu heat sink and put some new paste on it. If it still plays up, I may have to get another motherboard as you suggest ! Its still dying but at different times eg half an hour or two hours.
