| 769779 | 2009-04-30 10:41:00 | Can you burn a Ubuntu ISO to a DVD (E.g.: DVD-RW?) or does it have to be a CD? I have an AMD Athlon 64 processor, running 32 bit windows, should I use 64 or 32 bit version of Ubuntu??? Thanks :) |

| 769780 | 2009-04-30 10:49:00 | There are live DVD images as well so I guess it doesn't really matter I have heard that 64bit Linux is slightly quicker on a CPU that supports 64bit, than 32bit Linux I just use 64bit coz I can, noticed a very slight improvement but then Gentoo is pretty quick anyway |

Your processor support 64bit which is good if you wanna install 64bit linux:p If you'll hit the 4gb memory and do lots of heavy work and run lots of VM's get the 64bit version. Otherwise, 32bit will be fine. Some apps run slower in 64bit that 32bit though There aren't many 64bit driver problems though. Blam |

| 769786 | 2009-04-30 11:53:00 | Altho some burning programs can be fussy. If the ISO isnt big enough for a DVD, it wont burn it, it'll tell you this. Usually if the ISO is under 700mb the program usually expects a cd |

I looked this up (www.tuxradar.com) - as one of the more current links - hardly scientific but interesting. I don't use Ubuntu - Debian / Kde for me (Mepis) - but I am using 64bit and I compile backports for the community repository. I've noticed that compiling on 64bit is noticeably faster (especially the big apps). I switched from 32 to 64 quite a while ago - and everything seems 'snappier'. Would be really interested if there are modern benches which show 64b to be slower. TIA - Brooko |
